1742 Hederichs Map of Africa
Description: A scarce 1742 miniature map of Africa by German historian Benjamin Hederichs. This map covers the entire continent of Africa as well as adjacent parts of Arabia and Europe. Following the conventions of the period Hederichs maps the Nile River according to the Ptolemaic two lakes theory. Decorative allegorical title cartouche in the lower left quadrant. Published for Hederichs 1742 Anleitung zu den fürnehmsten historischen.

Cartographer: Benjamin Hederichs (December 12, 1675 - July 18, 1748) was a German historian and editor. He was born in Geithain and studied at the Besuch der Fürstenschule Grimma and afterwards pursued further studies in Leipzig and Wittenberg. In 172 he worked as a monastic teacher and later rector in Großenhain. Hederich produced numerous dictionaries and textbooks and contributed studies to others in chronology, genealogy, heraldry, numismatics, and diplomacy.
