1779 American Revolutionary War Powder Horn with Philadelphia View

This is a beautifully carved powder horn dating to 1779. The horn is beautifully carved with the owner’s name and date of 1779 carved around the wide base of the horn. Images of a windmill, two ships, and several images of buildings are carved throughout. Powder horns like this were used to store gun power for the flint-lock style rifles common during the Revolutionary War. The horn belonged to Ensign Abner Dunn of the IX Pennsylvania Regiment during the American Revolutionary War. He was promoted to Lieutenant in May of the same year. The 9th Pennsylvania regiment participated in many battles, including Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, Battle of Monmouth and the Battle of Springfield.
