Giovanni Antonio Magini
(fl. 1555 1617)

Giovanni Antonio Magini (1555 - 1617) was an important 16th century map engraver, astrologer, astronomer and mathematician based in Padua, Italy. In his time he corresponded with Ortelius, Mercator and Galileo among other Renaissance luminaries. Magini was the head of Mathematics at the Padua University, a position he was received preference for over Galileo. There he developed his own Geocentric planetary theory in opposition to the propositions of Copernicus. Magini was also the first Italian to produce an atlas of his native country, the posthumously published Atlante geografico d'Italia. However, he is best known for his reduced size edition of Ptolemy's Geographiae published in 1596.Click here for a list of rare maps from Giovanni Antonio Magini.
