1815 Map of Corsica or Corse, France
Description: A scarce large format map of the Mediterranean island of Corsica (Corse), France. This map was initially part of a much larger multi panel folding map covering northern Italy. Alas, the remainder of the greater map has been lost. Based upon t style engraving, French text, and paper type, we can fix this map with some certainty to the final days of the Napoleonic First French empire, or about 1810 - 1814. What remains is impressive. This large two panel dissected map of Corsica covers the entire island in staggering detail with topography rendered in almost three dimensional intensity. A portion of the map's title cartouche appears on the lower left quadrant. This map consists of two panels, each of which has been dissected and mounted on linen in twelve sections. The map exhibits some water staining which could be easily removed by a competent restorer.
Date: 1815 (undated)
Size: Printed area measures 43 in height x 26.5 inches in width (109.22 x 67.31 centimeters)
Condition: Good. These two panels were part of a much larger map covering all of Italy. Sadly the remainder of what must have been a magnificent map has been lost. Example exhibits some water damage - see photo.
