Description

This is a lovely c.1840 manuscript map of Zululand and vicinity, South Africa. It covers the region from the Tugela River north to Umzoloni or Unkunginglove. According to the text in the lower right quadrant, this map is based on the original map ‘from Captain A. F. Gardner’s Narrative of a Journey to the Zoolu Country.

Allen Francis Gardiner was a British naval officer with an interest in missionary work. After the death of one of his daughters, he traveled to Africa in 1834 and explored the Zulu country. It was here that he started the first missionary station in Port Natal. His Narrative of a Journey to the Zoolu Country in South Africa, undertaken in 1835 describes his efforts, which due to native wars and political events, failed to manifest in any permanent success.

This map notes several towns and rivers and marks the route of Gardiner's journey.
