He began his career constructing roof gardens in New York. He was involved with multiple world fair exhibits, beginning at the Philadelphia's 1876 Centennial Exposition. He produced the 'Creation' exhibit at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair and at the time was credited with building more 'big amusement illusions than any other man in America'. Some of his more famous exhibits include 'The House Upside Down', 'Dante's Inferno', 'Under and Over the Sea', 'The Crystal Maze', and ' Mahomet's Mountains'. Holland's paintings mostly focused on wildlife, and he billed himself as 'The World's Animal Painter'. He was later involved with A. W. Leonard in the Panama Canal Concession Company and a theater prop business, 'Holland and Leonard', both in San Diego. His cartographic work consists of single postcard, 'The Kiss of the Oceans'. copyrighted in 1910, promoting the Panama Canal, set to open in 1915.
