An outstanding 1878 first-edition large scale map of Lisbon, Portugal - this is largest and best printed map of Lisbon to appear in the second half of the 19th century, and the definitive plan of that city during the transformative Fontismo period. The map is presented in two enormous sections, which, if joined, would measure some 90 inches wide. It reveals individual city blocks, streets, and public squares, and in many cases, names individual buildings. This is a superb, rare example of Joachim Ottens' large, beautifully engraved c. 1719 four-sheet map of Spain and Portugal that notably references battles during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701 - 1714). The map was printed to four sheets for inclusion in folio atlases, but could be joined together to make a wall map. The plates had a convoluted, yet narrow publication history; any state of this map is a rare find. (more details)

The only known surviving example of this large-format woodcut 'cheap print' issued by George Thompson in 1813, celebrating the Duke of Wellington's stunning triumph over French forces at the Battle of Vitoria (June 21, 1813), a decisive battle in the years-long Peninsular War (1808 - 1814). It is likely the earliest printed representation of the battle, being a news-as-it-happened publication. The victory helped to solidify Wellington's stature as the ablest British commander of land forces, earning him the rank of field marshal and later the title of Duke. An exceptional 1748 wall map of the Kingdom of Sevilla or Seville, Spain, by Francisco Llobet. Coverage extends from the Guadiana River, or Odiana, which forms the western border of Sevilla and Portugal, to the border with Granada, and from Extremadura and Cordova to the Gulf of Cádiz. It is large, with meticulous detail, illustrating towns, villages, and roads. Some effort is made to further illustrate terrain, distinguishing between developed agricultural lands, mountains, marshy terrain, lowland plains, and forests. This is a striking 1956 Instituto Geográfico y Catastral map of Spain and Portugal and their national railroad networks. The Instituto Geográfico deftly employs color coding to differentiate between rail lines. The solid red lines, which dominate the map, illustrate the Spanish national railway network. Thin purple rail lines, which appear almost exclusively in the various insets situated around the border, are operated only by the Spanish government. Green and orange lines represent independent railroad companies. Importantly, wide gauge lines are illustrated by the wider lines, while the skinnier lines trace narrow gauge routes. Blank or white coding indicate railroads under construction. A key appears in the bottom right, with the leyendasignos conviencionales along the right border. (more details)

This is an attractive 1598 S. Münster woodcut view of the Portuguese city of Lisbon, one of the earliest acquirable. It displays the famous city, emphasizing the busy wharves of this essential port, and many ships coming and going. This is an example of the earliest Münster edition of this view, which is nevertheless among the last views added to Münster's work. It was printed in the 1598 German edition of Cosmographia, consequently it is one of the scarcest views from this work, having only appeared in its last three editions of 1598, 1614 and 1628. This is a beautiful 1552 example of Sebastian Münster's Ptolemaic map of northwestern Africa and the Strait of Gibraltar. This was the first of Ptolemy's three particular maps of the part of Africa known to Rome in the second century; it represented the southwestern limit of the Alexandrian Roman geographer's knowledge.
Specifically, the map focuses on the Roman African provinces (annexed by Emperor Claudius in 44 C.E.) of Mauretania Tingitana west of the Moulouya River, and Mauritania Caesariensis to the east of it. The two provinces were administered respectively from the coastal cities of Tangier (Tingis) and Jol Caesarea (now called Cherchell, in modern Algeria.) Both of these are shown and named on the map. The map extends southwards to the Atlas Mountains, which Rome considered to be the southern border of their African provinces. (Rome's actual occupation did not reach so far - in the west, the area of Volubilis (here 'Voli Bilian')The The eastern limit of the map is the River Ampsaga, which represented the boundary between Mauretania and Numidia. it is now understood to correspond with the modern Oued-el-kabir river in Algeria. This scarce, beautiful engraving is a 1688 Coronelli globe gore map of the Atlantic Ocean from the Equator to 50° N, encompassing the Grand Banks, the Azores Islands, and the Cape Verde Islands. It was engraved in Vincenzo Coronelli's 42-inch (3 1/2 foot) terrestrial globe, reprinted in 1697 for inclusion in his Libro dei Globi and Isolario. In addition to the above locations, it includes near the equator an archipelago labeled 'Revedo de S. Pedro' which may represent the Atlantic island of Saint Paul. This is a scarce, separately-issued c. 1770 Jean Lattré map of the town, port and peninsula of Gibraltar. This eastern-oriented map is richly detailed, showing the remarkable and forbidding topography of the peninsula and its fortifications. The map shows the positions held by the Spanish and the British during their long stalemate following the 1727 Spanish siege of Gibraltar. Lattré appears to have produced this map as a separate issue near the end of the Seven Years' War (1756 - 1763), coinciding with Spain's entrance to that conflict. Although the war ended without any action at Gibraltar, it would have been considered a possible theater of engagement. (more details)

This is Sebastian Munster's 1540 map of Spain and Portugal, from the 1568 French edition of Munster's Cosmographia Universalis. It is among the earliest modern depictions of the Iberian Peninsula.A Closer LookThe map covers all of Spain and Portugal, extending from the African shores of the Strait of Gibraltar to the southwestern reaches of France across the Pyrenees Mountains. Throughout, the mountains and rivers of the region are shown pictorially, as are the many cities: among these are Lisbon, Cadiz, Madrid, Cartagena, and Barcelona; a portion of France beyond the Pyrenees is shown as well, with Montpellier noted among the cities there. The map is a somewhat simplified and clarified iteration of Waldseemüller's 1513 Tabula Moderna et Nova Hispanie; both of these maps are distinct from earlier printed maps of the Iberian Peninsula in that the toponymy - that is to say, the naming of places - is based here on contemporary knowledge rather than the work of the second-century geographer Claudius Ptolemy. Until 1513, the only printed maps of the region reflected the geographical knowledge of Imperial Rome: following the rediscovery of Ptolemy's work in the 15th century, geographers strove to update the maps with recognizable names for the cities, rivers, mountains, and kingdoms. This is an 1836 Jacques-Vital Belmas city plan or map of Pamplona, Spain, during the 1813 Siege of Pamplona, one of the battles in the larger Peninsular War (1808 - 1814). The besieged French forces managed to hold out for over four months, delaying Wellington's advance into France, since he refused to move into France until after Pamplona had fallen.
