This is Vincenzo Coronelli's striking 1688 two-sheet map of North America - one of the largest and most influential atlas maps to appear in the late 17th century. It emerged as much of North America had yet to be penetrated or was in the earliest stages of exploration and colonization - a true golden land of possibility. There is much of interest, including being among the first maps to embrace the cartography of Don Diego Peñalosa in New Mexico, a bold embrace of the Insular California trope, recognition of the Danish explorations of Jens Munk, an early usage of the term Chicago (Chekagou), and an interesting mapping of the apocryphal Lake May, the great inland sea of the southeast. A seminally important map, this is the 1687-88 Coronelli-Nolin separately-published map of the North American Southwest, in its first edition. This map is a cornerstone for any collection dedicated to the southwest: it is the first published map to introduce the cartography of Don Diego Peñalosa with regard to the Rio Grande valley as far north as Santa Fe. Peñalosa's cartography not only has a swashbucklingly enigmatic history, but it is also foundational for most subsequent maps of the region for the next century. This is also one of the earliest maps, following the 1660 Nicolosi map, to correctly map the Rio Grande emptying into the Gulf of Mexico as opposed to the Sea of California. (more details)

It was first issued in 1684, explicitly as a rebuttal to French and Dutch maps and their representation of European spheres of influence in North America. It is the first general map of America to name Philadelphia, set in a boldly exaggerated depiction of 'The English Empire' in North America. (more details)

This is the 1646 first state of Robert Dudley's chart of the middle part of the Americas, illustrating the proximity of the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and emphasizing the narrow parts of Central America dividing the two bodies of water. The chart features the western part of the Caribbean, but it is particularly noted for being the first printed sea chart to focus on the Pacific coast, including California. It is, along with Dudley's more narrowly focused charts, the first printed chart of the West Indies and South Florida to employ the Mercator Projection. An inset chart in the lower left focuses specifically on the coast of California, from Baja to Cap Mendocino. (more details)

This beautifully engraved map was one of a handful produced by De Wit to showcase his skill as he struck out on his own as a mapmaker, after having worked for many years under the Blaeu family. It represents a synthesis of traditional imagery with state-of-the-art geographical ideas. It was not intended for any particular atlas, although surviving examples occasionally appear bound into other works, including Doncker's Zee-Atlas. (more details)

This is Herman Moll's 1707 / 1726, large-format double-hemisphere map of the world. It is the largest and most visually entertaining English atlas map of the world from the early Colonial period; it captures a view of the world in the midst of a transformation from the state of the art of the 17th century to a more scientifically focused style of cartography. The new mode - predominantly French - dominates the map: ironic, given Moll's adopted English chauvinism. (more details)

A magnificent Ukiyo-e woodblock triptych in the distinctive Yokohama-e style, produced in 1862 by the genre's most prolific master, Utagawa Sadahide. It portrays a group of American ships leaving the 'port of California,' almost certainly San Francisco, presumably bound for Japan. This work is especially notable as it depicts a purely foreign scene, rather than the more common illustrations of foreigners in Yokohama or elsewhere in Japan. (more details)

This is Alexis-Hubert Jaillot's impressive and scarce 1692 map of North America. The map offers much of interest, including a bold presentation of California as an Island, evidence of otherwise unpublished preliminary data from the 1673 Marquette-Joliett Expedition of the upper Mississippi watershed, a hopeful open-ended mapping of the western Great Lakes, and a large apocryphal freshwater sea in Appalachia. Cowboy Culture, by a cowboy.
Considered Jo Mora's most iconic image, this is the 1933/41 Evolution of the Cowboy. The image celebrates all things cowboy, from the rodeo to saddles, steers, and chuckwagons. Mora himself became a rodeo cowboy, and his depictions of cowboy life and culture reflect realism grounded in experience. (more details)
The end of an era.
This is a 1985 view of the Castro neighborhood in San Francisco, produced by artist Graham Bruce. It combines elements of a conventional pictorial map of the period (advertisements for local businesses) with a more ethereal aesthetic, celebrating the nightlife of this 'mecca' of LGBTQ culture. However, the view was also produced in the most frightening period of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in San Francisco's gay community, and may have been intended as an elegy for both the people who had died and the culture of gay liberation that was imperiled by the epidemic. This is a series of three 1848 maps by E. O. C. Ord of the gold discoveries in California's Sacramento Valley. These are, in aggregate, the first and most significant early maps illustrating the 1849 California Gold Rush, compiled to introduce the gold discovery to the U.S. Congress. As noted by Wheat, these were 'the first map[s] to make any pretense at cartographic accuracy after the gold discoveries,' thus being 'the most important of all the maps of 1848 . . . of paramount importance in any cartographical consideration of the gold rush.' The maps accompany Ex. Doc. No. 1, issued for the House of Representatives. (more details)

This is Abraham Ortelius' seminal 1570 map of Tartary, one of the first maps to focus on the North Pacific coasts of America and Asia, in a sharp, early edition of 1573. While the map is intended to the Asian empire of the Great Khan, it is also notable for what it presents of America. The map includes what is now the west coast of the United States, northwestern Canada, and Alaska, a part of the world almost entirely unknown at that time. It is the earliest obtainable map to name California. It also one of the most definitive early maps to distinctly separate the continents of Asia and America (via the Strait of Anian) well before the explorers of the 18th century proved that separation to be fact. A fine 1894 chromolithograph George Henry Burgess view of San Francisco depicting the city in 1849, at the height of the California Gold Rush. Burgess drew this view based on sketches drawn from life in 1849, shortly after his arrival in San Francisco. He compiled these into a painting in 1891. It was transferred to lithographic stone, as here, in 1894. The view looks westward along Montgomery Street with Telegraph Hill prominent in the distance. A temporary camp of newly arrived 49ers fills the foreground, with two mounted Californios riding out of town at left. New construction and warehouses occupy the center, with the busy harbor at right bringing in waves of 49ers. This is essentially today's Financial District. There is a key to the map in the lower left, identifying all prominent locations throughout the growing city. (more details)
