This rare plan of Jerusalem is the earliest printed iteration of Pietro Vesconte's manuscript plan of the city. While not committed to print until this 1611 edition by Jacques Bongars, the map is the work of the 14th-century Venetian cartographer Vesconte, who produced it c. 1320 to promote Marino Sanudo's proposed crusade to recapture the city. As such, it is one of the earliest surviving plans to support a specific military effort. (more details)

This is the map of the mythical Kingdom of Prester John in eastern Africa, issued by Willem Blaeu in 1635, in a beautiful example. The map covers from the Bight of Benin to the Indian Ocean and from Arabia and the Red Sea to Mozambique. It includes two decorative cartouches, as well as stylized images of African fauna, including elephants, monkeys, and ostriches. While the African coast exhibits considerable advances over earlier maps of the region, the interior of Africa exhibits a cartography primarily based on the literature of antiquity and little changed from the days of Ptolemy, and its primary subject matter is that of legend. This is a rare, important, separately issued 1688 English map of America, printed by Philip Lea and John Overton. It was first issued in 1684, explicitly as a rebuttal to French and Dutch maps and their representation of European spheres of influence in North America. It is the first general map of America to name Philadelphia, set in a boldly exaggerated depiction of 'The English Empire' in North America. (more details)

An important and charming 1720 satirical allegory map, commonly known as the 'Fools Head' or 'Fools Cap,' intended to illustrate the dangers and pitfalls of 'bubble economies.' After the bursting of the Dot-Com Bubble and the more disastrous United States Housing Bubble (and subsequent sub-prime mortgage crises), most will find the themes of this 18th-century map taunting the speculators in the Mississippi Scheme - poverty, sorrow, and despair - quite familiar. This is a handsome example of the J. B. Homann 1725 map of the Turkish Empire in Europe, Asia and Africa. It shows the extent of the Ottoman Empire encompassing \the Arabian Peninsula, as well as the coastal parts of the empire in North Africa and Egypt. The border with the Persia is shown in the east, along with a considerable part of what is today Iran and Central Asia. The empire's contentious border in Europe, abutting Hungary, Transylvania, and Poland, is also shown. The area north of the Black Sea shows both Tatar territories and those of Muscovy on the Turkish frontier. (more details)

This is a rare 1732 Joseph Stocklein depiction of Mount Horeb, (identifying it as Mount Sinai) Mount Saint Catherine, and a third mountain labeled 'Strasberg'. The stylized mountains are set in a dramatically foreshortened bird's eye view of the Holy Land, encompassing not only all of the Sinai Peninsula but also including the land of Canaan and (judging by the prominent Crucifixion) Jerusalem itself. Thus Stocklein's view places the site of Moses' receipt of the Ten Commandments in a markedly Christian framework. The view combines scenes from different stages in Biblical history: Atop Horeb/Sinai, a vignette numbered '7' shows Moses receiving the Commandments (the Ark of the Covenant lies beside him, awaiting the tablets.) Nestled between the mountains are the walled compounds of the Monastery of St. Catharina, built between 548 and 565 CE.

At the far left is a body of water, labeled as the Red Sea. At the top center, not to be mistaken for the sun (which can be seen rising to the right of the view, indicating east) is the radiance-streaming Tetragrammaton, reinforcing the identity of Mount Horeb as the 'Mountain of YHWH.' The view is numbered and lettered, with reference to an absent descriptive text. (more details)

This is Louis Le Rouge's 1755/1787 map of the British Colonies in North America, surrounded by French territorial claims as they stood at the beginning of the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763). While the present state was published just after the American Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783), it was composed and first printed in 1755, and was edited in 1777 to provide a record of the earlier conflict. Hence, its focus is on the battles of the earlier conflict and the extensive inclusion of Native American tribes and settlements. (more details)

This extraordinary 1763 engraving emerged from one of the great religious and political controversies of 18th-century France. It reproduces the notorious Tableau de la Religion, a monumental allegorical painting discovered at the Jesuit college in Billom and subsequently seized upon as evidence during the campaign to suppress the Society of Jesus. At its center, an immense Jesuit galleon sails triumphantly toward salvation while popes, kings, Catholics, heretics, sinners, and demons struggle through the surrounding waters. In a remarkable reversal of meaning, an image apparently created to glorify Jesuit spirituality was transformed by the Society's enemies into propaganda against it - purported visual proof of Jesuit arrogance, ambition, and claims to spiritual supremacy. This is the 1774 first French edition of James Cook's seminal first map of New South Wales, Australia. The map is a product of Cook's search for the often speculated upon southern continent or 'Terra Australis,' which scholars from the 16th century on believed, based upon ancient Greek texts, must exist at the base of the world. This map is significant for Australia collectors as the first definitive mapping of the coasts of New South Wales. (more details)

An iconic 1774 American political cartoon by Henry Dawkins lampooning the Tax Act and the Boston Tea Party. This is likely the most important political cartoon issued in the lead-up to the American Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783). It was published after the Tea Party but before the Intolerable Acts. The image is innovative in its use of cartographic imagery, larger-than-life representations of key political figures, and use of allegory. Moreover, it stands out for its remarkable encapsulation of the complex pre-Revolution political environment. (more details)

This is Franz Xaver Habermann's engraving, showing his conception of the unrest gripping the city of New York following the reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 9, 1776 and the onset of the American Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783). The view refers to a historical event: The reading of the Declaration so emboldened the patriotic crowd that they tore down the statue of King George III, decapitated it, broke it into pieces - and shipped the remains to Connecticut, where the 4000 pounds of lead were melted down to cast 40,000 bullets, to be used against the British. (The head was set on a pike outside of Moore’s Tavern near Fort Washington, but was rescued by loyalists - including British officer, military engineer and mapmaker John Montresor - and eventually sent back to England.) New Yorkers never did like the statue: in 1773 an anti-graffiti, anti-desecration law was enacted in the city expressly to protect the statue from the abuse it regularly received. (more details)

A striking 1781 Philippe Buache map of the world, presented on an unusual polar projection rendered from the North Pole. This is the first work to attempt to map the ocean floor - a revolutionary work connecting submarine with surface geography. Although Buache's geography was speculative at best, the work is a landmark achievement in its attempt to illustrate and scientifically assess the unknowable oceanic depths. (more details)

This important 1807 map of lower Manhattan, New York City, published by Isaac Riley, William Bridges, and Peter Maverick, is a most unusual piece with a confused and complex history. It predates the 1811 Commissioner's Plan, thus representing the definitive plan of New York City at the time of publication and exerting a profound influence on the developing street grid of Lower Manhattan. It is the earliest obtainable example of one of the most important founding cartographic documents relating to the development of New York's street grid - the Mangin-Goerck map. (more details)

The only known surviving example of this large-format woodcut 'cheap print' issued by George Thompson in 1813, celebrating the Duke of Wellington's stunning triumph over French forces at the Battle of Vitoria (June 21, 1813), a decisive battle in the years-long Peninsular War (1808 - 1814). It is likely the earliest printed representation of the battle, being a news-as-it-happened publication. The victory helped to solidify Wellington's stature as the ablest British commander of land forces, earning him the rank of field marshal and later the title of Duke. The 'cheap print' is a uniquely British form of graphic news publishing issued for distribution among the uneducated but engaged populace. (more details)

This rare 1854 J. H. Millar map of Iowa City - considered the second published map of the city - offers an extraordinary portrait of Iowa's first state capital during a period of rapid growth, real estate speculation, and suburban development. Twelve surrounding vignette views by celebrated Iowa artist George Henry Yewell depict churches, civic institutions, prominent residences, Clinton Street, and the State House, making this scarce map an exceptional visual record of mid-19th-century Iowa City. Presented here is the full December 17, 1861 edition of The New York Herald published eight months into the American Civil War. This edition features two maps: a front-page map of the United States that highlighting the Confederacy and a map of the Gulf Coast of Mississippi detailing Major General Benjamin Butler's landing on Ship Island. Ship Island, located twelve miles off the coast of Mississippi in the Gulf of Mexico, provided the Union Army with a base of operations in the Gulf. It also allowed the Union some flexibility, in that they could theoretically launch attacks against Texas or New Orleans from Ship Island, which caused the Confederacy significant anxiety. A rare American Civil War naval combat scene. This is an 1862 Currier and Ives view of the American Civil War naval battle of Plum Point Bend (also known as Battle of Fort Pillow), fought on the Mississippi River in Tennessee. The view illustrates the close-quarters fighting between Confederate and Federal ironclads. The Federal ironclads Cincinnati, Cairo, Benton, St. Louis, and Carondelet occupy the foreground. Multiple vessels are sinking or on fire such that the chaos of battle is almost palpable. (more details)

This is a beautiful example of Egbert L. Viele's 1865 topography and waterways map of Manhattan, one of the scarcest, most important, and most enduring maps of New York City ever published. Viele's map details the canals, swamps, rivers, ditches, ponds, meadows, and drainage basins of Manhattan as they existed prior to the city's urban development. A version of the Viele map remains in use today by architects and contractors who need to be certain they are not building over underground rivers and swamps that may destabilize a new construction's foundation. This is an 1872 André Gill political cartoon map of France after the fall of the Paris Commune. France appears as a gigantic spider's web, with the fly at the center representing the communards, identifiable by the symbolic red Phrygian cap. Four spiders surround the fly, apparently poised for attack. The spider on the top left represents the French government, then the Third Republic, identified by the fleur-de-lis. Proceeding clockwise, the next spider wears the iconic Prussian Pickelhaube, represents Germany and stands astride Alsace and Lorraine, two French provinces that Germany annexed after their victory in the Franco-Prussian War. The spider in the lower right corner represents the exiled French Emperor Napoleon III, who was captured by Prussia during the Franco-Prussian War. The fourth 'spider,' which is, in fact, a pear with spider's legs, represents the Royalists. The pear was the preferred symbol for the 'rotund' Louis-Philippe, the last French king. (more details)

This is an 1873 William Gilpin geological map of North and Central America. This map is the first map from Gilpin's book Mission of the North American People. A beautifully colored map, two different 'systems' are illustrated: the mountain system in detail and the 'Great Calcareous Plain' as a 'unit'. Thus, no division is illustrated between different regions of the 'Great Calcareous Plain', whereas regional differences in the mountains of North America are depicted with color. Several concentric circles are meant to show 'maritime selvage'. Our research did not provide us with a satisfactory explanation of this phrase. (more details)

This is a rare 1878 Temperance (anti-alcohol) broadsheet, published by a Horace L. Hastings, a prolific Boston tract publisher and hymn composer. The captioned photoengraved vignettes that make up the broadside tell three discrete tales, all testifying to the destructive effect of alcohol consumption. The four corners of the sheet are dedicated to portraits of one man over the course of a drinking life. ‘A NICE YOUNG MAN’ in the upper left becomes ‘A FAST YOUNG MAN’ in the upper right, his hair grown longer and less neat, a cigarette appearing in his sneering mouth, his gaze indirect. He then transforms into ‘A SOT’ as depicted in the lower left, having developed a bulbous nose, a pipe habit, and an inability to care for hats. The lower right corner shows our hero’s final stage, ‘A BLOT,’ whose carelessness extends to the rest of his wardrobe. Presumably he can no longer afford tobacco, for his pipe is unlit and upside down. (more details)
