This is a striking 1832 Heinrich Berghaus map of the Philippines. It was issued for Berghaus' loose-leaf Atlas von Asien, the best-informed general cartographic work on Asia to appear in the mid-19th century. It is the first large-scale map to comprehensively incorporate both the Malaspina hydrography and Ildefonso de Aragón's (c. 1826) geographical surveys. It thus offers unprecedented accuracy and the first substantial critical analysis of Philippine hydrography and cartography, making it a seminal chapter in the archipelago's mapping. (more details)

This is a superb, first-state example of Robert Dudley's 1646 general nautical map of South Asia, from the Arabian Peninsula to the Philippines, including the coastlines of India, the Malay Peninsula, Cochinchina, and southern China. Countless islands of the Indian Ocean are charted, as are the western parts of the East Indies. It is the first printed chart of the route to the Spice Islands produced by an Englishman; it is the first to utilize the Mercator Projection, and the first to show prevailing winds, currents, and magnetic variation. The chart's portolan-like lines suggest its origin in the manuscript charts that informed it. Aesthetically, they distinguish this chart as one of the most elegant works dedicated to the region. It is a rarity on the market and a prize map for collectors. (more details)

This is Abraham Ortelius' 1589 map of the Pacific; here is the best example to appear on the market in recent years, with a strong strike and fine original color. Abraham Ortelius' map is as important as it is beautiful - Burden hailed it as 'one of the most important maps that appeared in the Ortelius atlases' and 'one of Ortelius' most desirable maps'. The map is not only the first to focus on the Pacific Ocean, but it is also the first acquirable map to separately identify North and South America. (more details)

This is the exceedingly rare 1745 nautical map of the South China Sea and the Philippines, which appeared in Mannevillette's banned first edition of his groundbreaking nautical atlas, the Neptune Oriental. When published, this chart represented the finest available cartography of the South China Sea, Southeast China Coast, and the Philippines - thus defining the Canton-Macao-Manila triangle. It was so accurate that French authorities, fearing for the security of their colonial empire, ordered all examples banned and destroyed. The map is additionally notable for its early and idiosyncratic inclusion of various islands, banks, and atolls in the area, many of which have become hotly disputed in recent decades. (more details)

A spectacular 1840 / 1852 map of the Philippines by Pierre Daussy and the French Dépot-général de la Marine. This map is significant as it reflects growing French interest in the Far East and coincides with the first French attempt to seize the Philippine island of Basilan as a base to counterbalance British power in Hong Kong. It is also part of the French Bureau des Longitudes' ongoing effort to revise its Table des Positions Géographiques des Principaux Lieux du Globe to conform to the most up-to-date measurements made possible by advances in hydrography, including widespread early 19th century adoption in the marine chronometer. Daussy published dozens of new charts, including this one, to reflect the significant corrections. (more details)

The first printed view of Singapore, issued less than ten years after it was founded by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781 - 1826). This aquatint view was published in 1828 after a painting by Royal Navy Captain Robert James Elliot. It looks on Singapore from Government Hill, covering the Plain, Singapore River, and Chinatown. Even at this early stage, the view presents a bustling city with numerous buildings and a lively port. We have not been able to trace Elliot's original painting. (more details)

This is a rare 1941 map of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Singapore, including portions of Thailand, British Burma, and French Indochina, printed in Taiwan for the Information (Intelligence) Department of the colonial Taiwan Governor's Office in Taipei. It was produced on November 30, 1941, less than two weeks before the Japanese invasion of British Malaya that coincided with the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7 (December 8 local time). Along with British Malaya and Singapore, the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), the Philippines, and several other Western colonial possessions were invaded on or shortly after December 8. In the years and decades before this invasion, Taiwan had become an important node of information on 'South Seas' (Nanyō) Affairs, and served as a staging area for the invasion, including an intelligence gathering. The map includes two insets, one at top-right of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere (大東亜共栄圏) with Taiwan at the center and the area represented here shaded in red, and one at bottom-left of Singapore (シンガバール港).
