Published in Istanbul in 1923, at the tail end of the Armenian Genocide, this remarkable chromolithograph persuasive map in the Armenian language calls for an expansive independent Armenian state. Known as 'Wilsonian Armenia', the lands mapped here roughly conform to the 1920 Treaty of Sèvres, which called for an Armenian homeland. The 'Armenian' stipulations within the treaty were never actualized. The map is almost certainly a response to the Treaty of Lausanne (1923), which effectively erased Wilsonian Armenia from the diplomatic record. Considering the context of the Armenian Genocide and open anti-Armenian sentiment in Istanbul, it is a remarkable achievement that this map was even published. (more details)

This exceptionally rare c. 1912 Ottoman folding map of the Levant highlights the Hejaz Railway. Across scorching deserts, waterless expanses, and some of the most unforgiving terrain on earth, the Ottoman Empire forged one of the Islamic world's great engineering achievements: the Hejaz Railway. Financed without European loans through contributions from Muslims around the globe and constructed increasingly by Ottoman engineers and Muslim workers, the line reached more than 1,300 kilometers from Damascus to Medina (المدينة) by 1908. This is a rare and likely unique c. 1918 large-format Ottoman military resource map of the Levant prepared by the Yıldırım Orduları Grubu (Lightning Armies Group), the elite field command established to halt the advancing British Empire and its Arab allies during the final stages of World War I (1914-1918). Combining printed cartography with handstamps and manuscript annotations, the map inventories the region's strategic infrastructure, emphasizing hospitals, medical depots, supply centers, transportation networks, and other critical military resources essential to sustaining Ottoman operations. Intended for high-level logistical planning rather than tactical battlefield use, such a comprehensive assessment of military assets would have been among the Ottoman Empire's most closely guarded wartime documents, offering an extraordinary glimpse into the administrative and logistical foundations of the Palestine Campaign. Copied by hand from a British Admiralty chart, this map's creator exhibits extreme care and attention to detail, positioning nearly every depth sounding almost precisely where it appears on the printed version. Notes along the coastline provide landmarks and understanding and identify various landscapes, including 'very low sand hills,' 'cultivated and uncultivated plains', 'low swampy ground and shallow lakes,' and 'barren hills covered with brush wood.' Alexandretta, also known as Iskenderun, appears on the right side of the bay. Villages are labeled all around the bay, and the areas extensive river and stream network is depicted in detail. This is a beautiful, contemporary-color example of Nicolas Visscher's c. 1677 map of the lower Danube River, showing the Turkish administrative regions along the Black Sea coast. The map encompasses Transylvania, Serbia, Wallachia, Bulgaria and Romania. Portions of Greece and the Ukraine appear as well. Belgrade, Bucharest, and Istanbul are among the major cities appearing here. This map is notable in naming the Sanjaks, or Ottoman provinces in this contentious frontier region. These extend from the Sanjak of Ochakov (Ukraine on the Black Sea Coast) to the Sanjak of Gallipoli on the Sea of Marmora. Turkish rule in these regions was, by the time this map was produced, so established that many of the place names here are given both in approximations of the Turkish toponymy as well as European. This 1636 map of Asia Minor and Cyprus was engraved by Jansson in 1636 for inclusion in his business partner Henry Hondius's atlases. This example, lacking verso text and exhibiting a bold, sharp strike, was probably an early appendix issue intended for distribution to previous subscribers to Hondius' atlas. The map depicts the region from the Aegean Sea to the Euphrates River, and from the Black Sea to Cyprus and the Mediterranean Sea. The beautifully engraved map is embellished with an evocative cartouche flanked by two turbaned putti. West of Cyprus, two Ottoman triremes blast away at a square-rigged ship, alluding to the long contention between Turkish and Christian European powers over the region. Hondius and Jansson produced this map quite shortly after fellow Amsterdam mapmaker Blaeu produced a virtually identical map in 1634. Despite the heated competition evident between the two mapmaking giants, the map's geographical data was not strictly fresh - the 16th century cartographic giant, Gastaldi, remained authoritative with respect to this region.
