An extraordinary 1867 (Keio 3) map of Siberia and Alaska illustrates a moment of cultural collision and transformation. Printed in Japan using a remarkable multi-color copperplate process, the map is a conic projection covering Asia from the Caspian Sea to the Bering Strait. It extends farther east to include Alaska, and south to encompass Nepal, Korea, Tibet, most of China, and all of Japan. This is the first Japanese regional map to incorporate contemporaneous western cartographic technology for official strategic and military use. (more details)

This is the suppressed 1784 first edition of Henry Roberts and Captain James Cook's legendary 'Lost Map', issued separately by London publisher William Faden. This is the first map to illustrate the discoveries of Samuel Herne on the Coppermine River. The chart was censured due to the political machinations of the powerful Hudson Bay Company, which had a sustained interest in keeping Herne's voyage secret as it disproved the notion that an inland water route might connect the Hudson Bay with the Pacific, thus threatening the HBC's stock value. This is a unique 1910 Canadian Department of the Interior map of the timber berths, transportation networks, waterways, and government outposts across the Yukon Territory at the close of the Klondike Gold Rush. It illustrates the Canadian government's attempt to regulate the Timber Boom that followed the Yukon Gold Rush. More than 100 licensed timber berths appear alongside the Klondike Mines Railway, the White Pass and Yukon Route, and numerous North-West Mounted Police posts. Published when Yukon sawmills produced more than two million board feet of lumber annually, the map offers a monumental (8.5 feet long!) record of resource management, industrial development, and transportation in northern Canada. A beautiful example of Bellin's splendidly engraved 1766 map of the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, the Bering Strait, and Siberia. This map is significant as a reactionary piece to the waves of cartographic speculation about the American Pacific Northwest that defined the first half of the 18th century. Bellin, the premier hydrographer of his generation, here attempts to make sense of it all, bringing together the speculations of the previous generation, his own geographical expertise, and issuing, for the first time on a French map, Frederick Müller's revolutionary cartography relating to the discoveries of Vitus Bering and Aleksei Chirikov. A strong example of Cornelis van Wytfliet's 1597 Anian Regnum; this is the first separate map to focus on the Pacific Northwest. The map presents the area now occupied by most of the west coast of the United States, Canada, and Alaska, in spite of this region having been beyond the ken of European explorers and geographers for centuries to come. The westward-reaching land mass bears a serendipitous resemblance to Alaska, although the area depicted is far more massive. (more details)

One of the great navigator George Vancouver's most important and influential maps, this is Vancouver's 1799 mapping of Kodiak Island and Cook Inlet, near Anchorage, Alaska. Cook Inlet was one of the primary objectives of the Vancouver Expedition, as it remained unexplored after James Cook's initial tenuous mapping, it was considered a possible outlet for the Northwest Passage. Centered on the entrance to Cook Inlet, this map covers from Knik Arm and Turnagain Arm southwards as far as the southernmost tip of Kodiak Island. It evokes the rugged topography of the region, showing mountains and rough ground pictorially, albeit without precise elevations. Mount St. Augustin and several volcanoes are noted. An inset of Port Chatham, at the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula, appears in the upper left quadrant. (more details)

A rare World War II Japanese view propagandizing the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The view, by the artist Matsushima, was issued on December 10, 1941 (Showa 16), just three days after the fateful attack which precipitated U.S. involvement in World War II (1939 - 1945). Looking over the naval base at Ford Island (Pearl Harbor) and 'Battleship Row' from an elevated position northwest of the Island, it is based upon a famous photo taken from a Japanese plane during the attack. Japanese fighter and bomber planes fill the sky and U.S. battleships appear in ruins while the naval port burns. (more details)

This is Antonio Zatta's 1776 map of the North Pacific, a richly decorative vision of northwestern America before Cook's surveys transformed European understanding of the region. Extending from Hudson Bay and the Great Lakes westward to Siberia and Japan, it assembles an extraordinary collection of geographical conjectures: de Fonte's Northwest Passage, the Strait of Anian, a supposed Chinese colony, the River of the West, and the legendary lands of Quivira and Teguayo. Russian discoveries mingle with imaginary waterways and misplaced kingdoms, capturing a moment when exploration and speculation shared the same map. (more details)

An attractive example of Robert Sayer's 1775 translation of Gerhard Friedrich Müller's map presented to refute the spurious geography of the Pacific Northwest proposed by the French cartographers Philippe Buache and Joseph Nicolas De l'Isle. The map covers the same area as the 1752 Buache / De l'Isle map, and uses similarly state-of-the-art data from Russian explorers to show their successes in sailing via a Northeast Passage into the Pacific. This map however presents Müller's cartography of the American Northwest in explicit contradiction of the Buache/De l'Isle imaginary Sea of the West, and reliance on the fictional journeys of Admiral De Fonte. Thus, the map includes the North Pacific, including parts of Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, and Northeast Asia. Coverage extends from the Arctic Circle south to the latitudes of Vancouver and Japan. Most dramatically, the map includes a large, speculative peninsula extending westward from North America towards Asia. This, known as the Müller Peninsula, would become the dominant geographical model for the Pacific Northwest coast until the actual exploration of those coastal areas by Captain Cook in the 1770s. The map is also notable for its unusual Bulbous promontory in northern Siberia, an interpretation of the Witsen Peninsula, itself a mismapping of the Chukchi Peninsula. (more details)

Today Lanai is the smallest publicly accessible inhabited island. Here, Lanai's ahupua'a, traditional land subdivisions, stretch across the island. The few roads are illustrated, along with a handful of foot trails. (more details)

This is Robert de Vaugondy's 1772 map of the northern Pacific Ocean, after that of Joseph De l'Isle, combining two of the most elaborate fallacies to be presented on a map: the Sea of the West and the Northwest Passage attributed to the fictitious Admiral de Fonte. Both fictions fueled avid speculation throughout the latter part of the 18th century. When this map was produced for inclusion in Diderot's Encyclopédie, the question of the possible existence of a Northwest Passage was a great cartographic cause célèbre. (more details)
