A seminally important map, this is the 1687-88 Coronelli-Nolin separately-published map of the North American Southwest, in its first edition. This map is a cornerstone for any collection dedicated to the southwest: it is the first published map to introduce the cartography of Don Diego Peñalosa with regard to the Rio Grande valley as far north as Santa Fe. Peñalosa's cartography not only has a swashbucklingly enigmatic history, but it is also foundational for most subsequent maps of the region for the next century. This is also one of the earliest maps, following the 1660 Nicolosi map, to correctly map the Rio Grande emptying into the Gulf of Mexico as opposed to the Sea of California. (more details)

This is Girolamo Ruscelli's 1561 Nueva Hispania Tabula Nova, an early and influential map of what would become Mexico, California, Texas, and Florida. Ruscelli's work is an enlarged and improved version of the 1548 map of the same region by fellow Venetian Giacomo Gastaldi. Apart from the Gastaldi, Ruscelli's map is the earliest to focus so closely on the southern parts of what would become the United States and is one of the earliest acquirable maps to reflect Spanish exploration and colonization in the Americas. This is a large and detailed 1896 Robert H. Morton and General Land Office map of the New Mexico Territory. The map highlights private land grants, American Indian reservations, military bases, and forest reserves. Of greatest interest are the illustrated land grants, including the Tierra Amarilla Grant, the Beaubien and Miranda Grant, and the Mora Grant. Other annotations represent private grants that required new boundary surveys, were unconfirmed, or that had been rejected or dismissed by the U.S. government. This beautiful 1814 map is most likely the most important large format English atlas map of the American Southwest to be produced in the first quarter of the 19th century. It captures the region on the cusp of great change. At the time of issue Mexico was embroiled in the Mexican War of Independence (1810 - 1821). After the war, the newly independent Mexican Republic, eager to develop its vast northern provinces of Texas and New Mexico, initiated the 'Empressario' system, which opened Texas foreign settlement. The 'Empressario' grants gave rise to a large and industrious Anglo population in Texas and set the stage for the 1836 Texan Revolution and the subsequent Mexican-American War (1846 - 1848). Prospect for gold in Arizona!
This is a c. 1956 Walter J. Robertson diazotype map of Arizona placer gold deposits. Circular areas of dots mark placer deposits, some of which are annotated with the value of nuggets discovered. Capital 'G's mark known lodes (which require underground mining and are much less likely to be attractive to prospectors). Although the Arizona gold rushes predate this map by decades, or even a century, prospectors continued to explore to this day. Robertson created this map, along with maps of other states where there were placer gold deposits, for those individuals. (more details)

This is an 1847 William Hemsley Emory map of the Battle of Embudo Pass, one of the battles during the Taos Revolt in and near Taos, New Mexico, which was part of the Mexican-American War. Oriented to the north, the map depicts a section of Embudo Pass, a canyon not far from Taos. Colonel Sterling Price and the force he was leading to put down the Taos Revolt needed followed the Rio Grande (Rio del Norte) after defeating the insurrectionists at the Battle of Cañada. The column needed to travel along the road from La Joya (Joya) El Embudo (Embudo), which was flanked on both sides by high, rocky terrain, giving the region the look of a canyon. The road and the insurgent's positions are noted and labeled here, along with the Rio Grande and the highlands on either side of the canyon. (more details)

A wonderful example of Wilfred Stedman's beautifully illustrated 1951 map of the historical trails through New Mexico. Historic routes and trails are identified, including the Butterfield Trail, the Santa Fe Trail, and the Goodnight Loving Trail, as well as the exploratory routes taken by Cabeza de Vaca, Coronado, Onate, Escalante, and Espejo. Stedman's map also identifies various army forts, pueblos, and national and state monuments.
