A 1933 German propaganda map capturing one of the most pivotal moments in 20th-century history - the popular election of the Nazi Party into power in Germany and continental Europe's sharp turn towards fascism. Within months of the March 1933 election, the Nazi Party and its allies dismantled the Weimar Republic's federalist check-and-balance system and centralized political power into the hands of Adolf Hitler. From this moment, World War II (1939 - 1945) and the Holocaust were inevitable. This is the only known surviving example. (more details)

This is the 1790 first edition of Joseph Liesganig's seminal and massive map of Galicia, a territory roughly conforming to the modern border between Poland and Ukraine. The region, which had been granted to the Habsburgs in the First Partition of Poland, was virtually unmapped using modern methods before Liesganig and his team spent months preparing the present work, making it one of the most important maps of Eastern Europe of the era. A chilling 1971 wall map documenting Hitler's war crimes in Poland published for the Polish commission established to hunt and prosecute Nazi war criminals. The map's scope, focus, and execution transcend the purely geographic in illustrating the horrors of the Holocaust. Its extreme significance reflects broad efforts by scholars, mapmakers, and other researchers throughout the 1960s-70s to record and preserve knowledge of the Holocaust. It is ever more poignant in the light of modern revisionist historical research that has re-evaluated the Polish role in the Holocaust, as well as efforts by the current Polish government to legislate and control the historical record. This is a very scarce 1928 trilingual (Yiddish-Polish-English) map of the Second Polish Republic prepared by B. Horowitz for CENTOS, the largest Jewish charitable organization in Poland caring for orphans. It highlights the locations of Jewish social welfare organizations throughout the country, working with orphans. Despite harrowing difficulties, CENTOS pioneered modern social welfare in the tumultuous Interwar Period (1919 - 1939), when the Polish Jewish community faced not only an orphan crisis, the result of pogroms perpetrated during World War I, but also increased isolation and discrimination. This is an October 1944 First U.S. Army military situation map of Aachen, Germany, illustrating the defenses around the city as observed from aerial photography. This map was produced only days before the soldiers of the U.S. Army stormed the city and, after three weeks, successfully captured the city from the Germans. Aachen was a strategically important city, but it held greater significance from a psychological perspective. The Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne was born in Aachen, and Hitler and the Nazis referred to the Holy Roman Emperor as the First Reich. (Hitler referred to his empire as the Third Reich, thus creating a direct line between his regime and the Holy Roman Empire.) Aachen was the first city in Germany captured by the Allies, and this blow must have weighed heavily on Hitler's mind. (more details)

Many of these are related to the Holocaust, but others deal with much less traumatic subjects. (more details)
German dirigibles over Cologne in the lead-up to WWI.
This is a 1909 Marguerite 'Gamy' Montaut pochoir view of the dirigibles Parceval and Gross, flying over Cologne, Germany. Illustrated above the Rhine River, the Gross (produced by Gross-Basenach) is on the left and the Parceval (by Luft-Fahrzeung-Gesellschaft) on the right. A bridge crosses the Rhine in the left foreground, with onlookers marveling at the enormous new contraptions. A German soldier outside the frame marvels at the airships as well - lending the print a menacing warlike air. Cologne's skyline fills the background, with the spires of the Cologne Cathedral recognizable. Beautiful colors bring this eye-catching piece to life. Although a European production, we recognize clear homage to Japanese woodblock prints in terms of color, composition, and style. (more details)
