This is a rare c. 1720 Chéreau broadside leaflet map-view of the Gulf of Mexico littoral, just a few years after New Orleans was founded. It is likely the earliest printed view of New Orleans - though admittedly, it is not an accurate representation of the city at the time. The map was issued as a propaganda leaflet to promote New Orleans and French Louisiana, and thus coverage extends east to encompass most of the Florida Panhandle. It is among the earliest maps to include a view of New Orleans and the indigenous peoples of the Gulf. The present example is the first state, with extraordinary period color. (more details)

This is the rare first edition of Louis Brion de la Tour's significant 1777 map of the northern theater of the American Revolutionary War. Published in Paris in the immediate aftermath of the American victory at Saratoga and the surrender of General John Burgoyne's army, it is the first published illustration of the Battle of Saratoga to appear in France. The map brought French audiences cartographic news of the victory that transformed the course of the Revolution, helping convince France that the American cause was viable and setting the stage for the Franco-American alliance of 1778. As such, it captures a pivotal moment when an American colonial rebellion was becoming an international war. (more details)

A fine example of the 1780 Carington Bowles edition of the Lewis Evans map of the Middle British Colonies - one of the most important maps to emerge out of the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763). Essentially a piracy of a piracy, this is the Carington Bowles 1780 piracy of the 1771 Kitchen/Jefferys piracy of the 1755 Lewis Evans map - here given new relevance in the context of the American Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783). There are numerous subtle changes over earlier editions although the essential Lewis Evans chart - the finest and most comprehensive treatment of the Trans-Appalachia and the Ohio Valley from the French and Indian War through the Revolutionary period - remains the core. Pre-release editions of this map were circulated among British officers, including Major-General Edward Braddock (1695 - 1755), who consulted them during his disastrous 1755 expedition against the French-occupied Ohio River Valley (he was killed in the effort - but not for lack of cartographic reconnaissance). This is a rare 1779 American Revolutionary War map of Amelia Island, Florida, issued by Antoine de Sartine (1729 - 1801) and Jean-Nicholas Buache de Neuville (1741 - 1825). The chart was issued following the 1778 Treaty of Alliance, in which France formally recognized the United States and offered to aid the fledgling country against the British. Early in the war, French aid was primarily maritime. The Dépôt de Marine recognized the need for better nautical charts and began compiling and improving British charts of the North American coastline. (more details)

This is the first state of Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres's 1776 nautical map of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, titled Mecklenburgh Bay. An intricate record of the bay's islands, sheltered harbors, and navigational hazards, the chart includes Oak Island, identified as Gloucester Isle and later famed for its enduring buried-treasure legends. Published during the American Revolutionary War, the chart documents a coast where close ties to New England complicated allegiance to the British Crown. (more details)

This is an uncommon 1776 French-language map of the Thirteen Colonies and emerging United States by Augsburg cartographer Matthias Albrecht Lotter, published at the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. Drawing heavily on French cartographic traditions, the map presents British North America at the very moment the colonies declared independence and the United States began to take shape. Issued two years before France formally entered the Revolutionary War on the American side, it captures the continent on the cusp of a geopolitical transformation that would redraw North America.
