This is the important 1777 Georges Le Rouge French edition of the seminal John Mitchell map of the eastern part of North America. The Mitchell map is considered the single most important map in 18th-century American history. It was used as a primary reference for nearly every treaty and boundary dispute in colonial North America from the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763) through the late 19th century. The map is all the more astounding because this is Mitchell's one and only map - a truly remarkable feat of virtuosity. (more details)

A striking 1862 Currier and Ives original lithograph view of the historic American Civil War battle of the Monitor and Merrimac. This is one of the first images of the historic battle that would have been available to the general public. Moreover, it is the work of Frances 'Fanny' Palmer, the first American woman to work as a professional artist. (more details)

This rare volume is the first and only edition of Ambrosius Svenonis Nidelberg's 1675 description of the New World: it is the earliest substantial Swedish printed work pertaining to America. Sabin described it as 'one of the scarcest of the Swedish typographical productions of the seventeenth century on America.' The work is both geographical and ethnographic: it is the first Swedish description of North America's indigenous population. In particular, it is the first Swedish description of the English colonies in Bermuda and Virginia. (more details)

A fine example of the 1780 Carington Bowles edition of the Lewis Evans map of the Middle British Colonies - one of the most important maps to emerge out of the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763). Essentially a piracy of a piracy, this is the Carington Bowles 1780 piracy of the 1771 Kitchen/Jefferys piracy of the 1755 Lewis Evans map - here given new relevance in the context of the American Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783). There are numerous subtle changes over earlier editions although the essential Lewis Evans chart - the finest and most comprehensive treatment of the Trans-Appalachia and the Ohio Valley from the French and Indian War through the Revolutionary period - remains the core. Pre-release editions of this map were circulated among British officers, including Major-General Edward Braddock (1695 - 1755), who consulted them during his disastrous 1755 expedition against the French-occupied Ohio River Valley (he was killed in the effort - but not for lack of cartographic reconnaissance). The map prominently features the legendary city and land of Norumbega; at the same time, it is among the earliest acquirable maps to detail the Virginia colony, making it a superb demonstration of accuracy and error in close proximity. This map is among the earliest to show John White's cartography in Virginia. It is a foundational map for any collector of Virginia or the colonization of North America. (more details)

This is a rare 1861 bird's-eye view of the vicinity of Washington, D.C., including Richmond, the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and the Potomac River in the early days of the American Civil War (1861 - 1865). The work was compiled by Boston's most talented lithographer, Louis Prang. It is novel in that it is anticipatory, a tool for Prang's audience to understand a conflict that was universally expected, but which had not yet developed. (more details)

A beautiful example of Henricus Hondius' 1630 map of the Virginia colony and the Chesapeake Bay. Hondius' map is based upon the foundational 1612 John Smith map of the Virginia colony. Smith's fine survey work, combined with reports from indigenous American Indian tribes and wishful thinking, resulted in one of the most essential maps of America to emerge in the 17th century. Philip D. Burden, the author of The Mapping of North America, considers this map to be 'one of the most important maps of America ever produced and certainly one of the greatest influence.' This is an 1862 Walter L. Nicholson map of eastern Virginia and Maryland, published during the second year of the American Civil War (1861 - 1865). The map embraces the Eastern Theater of war, from Pennsylvania south to the North Carolina - Virginia border. Washington, D.C. stands out on the Potomac River, while red concentric circles in ten mile increments focus upon Richmond. No battlefields are explicitly marked, but landmarks for which battles were named both before and after this map was published, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania Court House, and Gettysburg, appear. Red overprinting illustrates the railroad network, which proved critical to both the Union and Confederate war effort. Both sides used the railroads to move men and supplies to and from battlefields. Railroads and railroad hubs thus became strategic targets for raids and advancing armies. (more details)

This is the Laurie and Whittle 1794 updated edition of Lewis Evans' foundational 1755 map of the middle part of the British Colonies in North America. Evans' map was the earliest to accurately detail the American frontier at the time of its original publication. It exhibits superb detail in the northern Appalachian Mountains and the Ohio River Valley, providing information about Native American tribes and transport, French and English forts, and other details pertinent to the frontiersman, including sources of salt, roads, and trails. It was hailed by Schwartz and Ehrenberg as 'the most ambitious performance of its kind undertaken in America up to that time.' So widely was the excellence of Evans' map recognized that he was unable to make any money on it at all, as it was promptly pirated by Jefferys, Sayer, Kitchen, Bowles, Crevecoeur, and, as here, Laurie and Whittle. This 1794 edition, at least, updates the map to indicate the outcome of the American Revolution - it names the United States and includes the boundary line between the United States and Canada as determined by the 1783 Treaty of Paris. This is also the first edition of the Evans map to include the new state of Kentucky - although erroneously positioned north of the Ohio River. (more details)

This is an uncommon 1776 French-language map of the Thirteen Colonies and emerging United States by Augsburg cartographer Matthias Albrecht Lotter, published at the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. Drawing heavily on French cartographic traditions, the map presents British North America at the very moment the colonies declared independence and the United States began to take shape. Issued two years before France formally entered the Revolutionary War on the American side, it captures the continent on the cusp of a geopolitical transformation that would redraw North America. A scarce 1864 Daniel A. Heald map of the Washington D.C. / Richmond, Virginia area during the American Civil War.  The strategically and politically critical corridor between Washington D. C. and Richmond, Virginia was one of the most hotly contested theaters of the American Civil War (1861 - 1865).  When this map was issued, in 1864, the war had already turned strongly in favor of the Union. Late 1864 and early 1865 witnessed a succession of battles as Union forces pursued Confederate armies as they retreated toward their capital, Richmond.  Battle sites are marked by crossed cavalry swords.  The main map relates to the 1862 Peninsular Campaign.  While the submap follows military operations in Eastern Tennessee, Northern Alabama, and Georgia - representing the final days of the Confederacy. This is a rare 1862 J. H. Colton map of Virginia, Maryland, and the Chesapeake Bay during the American Civil War (1861 - 1865). This map was issued for readers to follow Civil War events as they unfolded. In 1862, most of the Civil War had yet to come, but there was no doubt that most of the decisive battles would take place in the Mid-Atlantic theater, where the warring capitals stood just over 100 miles apart.
