This is Abraham Ortelius' 1589 map of the Pacific; here is the best example to appear on the market in recent years, with a strong strike and fine original color. This is a superb example of Sebastian Münster's 1540 map of America, the first printed map of the Western Hemisphere. It is the first map to name the Pacific Ocean and the Straits of Magellan, and among the earliest acquirable maps to show and name Japan (Zipangri, located surprisingly close to America). This is Frederic De Wit's scarce, separately issued 1660 carte à figures map of America. This beautifully engraved map was one of a handful produced by De Wit to showcase his skill as he struck out on his own as a mapmaker, after having worked for many years under the Blaeu family. It represents a synthesis of traditional imagery with state-of-the-art geographical ideas. A most unusual and intriguing 1833 wall map of America by Eustache Hérisson. The map makes a number of interesting and curious claims regarding multiple possibilities for a Northwest Passage - attempting to reconcile factual discovery, with apocryphal popular legends, and outright wishful thinking. It covers the western hemisphere, focusing on North and South America, and the surrounding oceans. Full coverage extends east to include the coasts of Europe and Africa, and west as far as New Caledonia and New Hebrides. As the title suggests, tracks follow the maritime routes of important explorers, including Cook, Vancouver, La Perouse. The map also notes the overland expeditions of Mackenzie (1780) and Hearne (1772). This is Abraham Ortelius' seminal 1570 map of Tartary, one of the first maps to focus on the North Pacific coasts of America and Asia, in a sharp, early edition of 1573. While the map is intended to the Asian empire of the Great Khan, it is also notable for what it presents of America. The map includes what is now the west coast of the United States, northwestern Canada, and Alaska, a part of the world almost entirely unknown at that time. It is the earliest obtainable map to name California. It also one of the most definitive early maps to distinctly separate the continents of Asia and America (via the Strait of Anian) well before the explorers of the 18th century proved that separation to be fact. This is Jean Janvier's 1760 rare, separately issued map of the western hemisphere, in its 1784 Paris edition. This map has, at an early date, been pasted down and hand-cut to form a simple jigsaw puzzle. Although the map does not name the new country, the colored national borders reflect the formation of the United States, which had been set according to the Treaty of Paris the year before this map was printed. The substance of the map is somewhat changed - dotted colonial borders have been burnished out and replaced with new ones, but the bulk of the engraving remains true to the 1760 edition. This is a double-sided 1949 E.O. Seymour pictorial air route map of the world in hemispheres for British Overseas Airways Corporation (B.O.A.C.). The Western Hemisphere appears on one side, and the Eastern Hemisphere occupies the other. Black lines trace B.O.A.C. routes and those of affiliated airlines. Pictorial vignettes highlight landmarks throughout the world, many of which fall outside of B.O.A.C.'s network. Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, New York's world-famous skyline, and Chateau Frontenac in Québec City all adorn this excellent map. Cultural vignettes, many of which portray a given part of the world in the most stereotypical manner possible, also decorate the hemispheres. An altogether fascinating 1762 map of North America and South America by Jean Janvier. The map displays the entire continent from the Antarctic Circle to the Arctic Circle, extends westward to New Zealand, and eastward as far as Africa and Spain. This map, which is heavily influenced by the theoretical maps of Joseph Nicolas de l'Isle and Philippe Buache, went through several states of which this is the earliest and possibly the most interesting. This is Jean-Claude Dezauche's 1785 map of the Western Hemisphere, here in a superb example of its 1800 revision. While the map has its basis in the similarly titled map first printed in 1722 by De l'Isle, Dezauche did not use the plate inherited from De l'Isle's heir Buache.
