This is the only known example of Nöel Cochin and Nicolas Berey's 1660 view of Paris - the earliest known large-format view of Paris published in Paris (an earlier large view was issued in Amsterdam). This view is likely a proof state or perhaps a study for a larger view of the same issued two years later in 1662 (c.f. Boutier #105). (more details)

An outstanding 1878 first-edition large scale map of Lisbon, Portugal - this is largest and best printed map of Lisbon to appear in the second half of the 19th century, and the definitive plan of that city during the transformative Fontismo period. The map is presented in two enormous sections, which, if joined, would measure some 90 inches wide. It reveals individual city blocks, streets, and public squares, and in many cases, names individual buildings. Overprinting in orange ink - doubtless a separate printing plate, offers contours illustrating Lisbon's dramatic topography. (more details)

This is the rare first edition of Christopher and John Greenwood's large-scale 1827 map of London, produced at the height of the Regency period, during which the city was being crafted into a neoclassical metropolis, driven by the Prince Regent (George IV) himself but realized by his favored architect, John Nash. Greenwood's map, in its grand presentation and monumental scope, is the essential cartographic expression of the Regency, and it is considered the largest and finest plan of London to appear in the 19th century. This is the c. 1900 Taride edition of Louis Bretez and Michel-Etienne Turgot's monumental 1739 map of Paris. Turgot's map of Paris is possibly the most ambitious urban mapping ever undertaken. This map shows the whole of 18th century Paris and offers an expansive perspective on the city before Baron Georges Eugène Haussmann's 19th-century redesign. Turgot, who held the mayor-like office of Prevôt des Marchands de Paris , commissioned Louis Bretez and Claude Lucas to produce this map. Oriented to the east on an axonometric projection, this map is best understood as an aerial view where in every building, window, tree, shadow, and park are shown from an equidistant aerial perspective. In order to produce the thousands of sketches and surveys required to complete this map, Bretez was issued a permit to enter every building in Paris. It took the team nearly five years of exhaustive sketching and surveying to assemble this masterpiece. (more details)

This is an October 1944 First U.S. Army military situation map of Aachen, Germany, illustrating the defenses around the city as observed from aerial photography. This map was produced only days before the soldiers of the U.S. Army stormed the city and, after three weeks, successfully captured the city from the Germans. Aachen was a strategically important city, but it held greater significance from a psychological perspective. The Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne was born in Aachen, and Hitler and the Nazis referred to the Holy Roman Emperor as the First Reich. (Hitler referred to his empire as the Third Reich, thus creating a direct line between his regime and the Holy Roman Empire.) Aachen was the first city in Germany captured by the Allies, and this blow must have weighed heavily on Hitler's mind. (more details)

This is an extremely rare 1668 plan of the port of Heraklion / Candia, Crete, illustrating the Venetian-controlled city during the final years of its 21-year-long Ottoman Siege. It is one of the only known works of the engraver Giovanni Maria Belgrano (fl. 1668-1680), who produced the work to accompany the rare first edition of Giovanni Battista Rostagno's (fl. 1668) travelogue based on his experience while he was a member of General Ghiron Francesco Villa's reconnaissance of Dalmatia and the Levant during the Cretan War. The present work was engraved in late 1668: the travelogue it appeared in was printed in Turin that same year. It is thus near contemporaneous the events depicted. (more details)

This 1870 Alfred Concanen view of Paris details the city's elaborate defensive works just 18 days before the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War Siege of Paris (September 17, 1870 - January 28, 1871). In this engagement, the enormous Enceinte de Thiers (Thiers Wall), constructed at extraordinary expense and believed to be impregnable, proved little more than a king's folly. (more details)

This is a 1655 Caspar Merian view of Paris, France - a superbly executed view showing that in artistry, Caspar was indeed his father's son. The view is oriented to the west-south-west, from a perspective both farther from the city and more to the east than the elder Merian's 1638 view. Rather than border the view with stylized or fanciful floral decoration, Caspar Merian has - following the lead of his father - chosen to frame the panorama in realistic semi-wild trees and bracken akin to that of the hillside from which the view was drawn, which has the effect of emphasizing that it was drawn from life. This is a 1912 chromolithograph map of Odessa, Ukraine, capturing the city at its economic and cultural zenith. It was produced for the Imperial Society of Agriculture of Southern Russia (Императорское Общество Сельского Хозяйства Южной России) by the Odessa lithographer A. Til and Company. At the time, Odessa was one of the largest cities in the Russian Empire, often called the 'Southern Capital of Russia' for its economic, military, and cultural significance. The map records the breakneck pace of development Odessa underwent in the early 20th century, when it was Russia's largest port and home to its most active stock exchange. It was also, as this map reflects, an extremely diverse city, home to large Russian, Jewish, Ukrainian, Greek, and Armenian communities. (more details)

This 1869 Johnston city plan or map of Edinburgh and Leith, Scotland, presents an impressively detailed overview of the city during an era of rapid industrial expansion. For more than 30 years, this map was the finest available map of Edinburgh, used for urban planning, city administration, trade, infrastructure development, and more. Shipyards, mills, factories, breweries, foundries, and ironworks, many of which are labeled, fuel an economic boom. The city's railways and stations are illustrated in detail. Central Edinburgh's iconic grid, designed by James Craig in 1768, stands in contrast to the maze of streets and lanes that create the rest of the city. As a historical aside, 1869 was also the year the 'Edinburgh Seven,' the first group of female students to enroll in a British university, began attending the University of Edinburgh Medical School, although they were not allowed to take degrees. This is the final 1814 Covens and Mortier issue of this large, beautifully engraved Nicolas Visscher II map of Amsterdam. It was originally entitled Plan de la Grande et Fameuse Ville Marchande d'Amsterdam / Plan van de Wyd Vermaarde en Beroemde Koop Stad Amsterdam, but in this state of the plan, the increasingly unfashionable cartouche has been removed, along with the title the plan had borne for a near a century. Architect Daniel Stalpaert initially compiled the plan. It was printed by Nicolas Visscher and was notable as one of the earliest depictions of the iconic ring canals, which were added to the city in the first half of the seventeenth century. The plan is oriented to the south-southwest to display the vibrant port, teeming with ships. It is a magnificently detailed work, with nearly three hundred streets named and numbered. Particularly famous or important structures are illustrated pictorially, as are the windmills built around the city to operate the canal system. (more details)

This is an uncommon 1855 George Frederick Cruchley map of London and its immediate environs. Presented here in case format, Cruchley's map depicts the area thirty miles around London, or from Hertford to Turnbridge and Godalming, and from Windsor to Chatham. Exceptionally vivid color work identifies counties, rail lines, roads, and forests. The detail throughout is extraordinary, with even such insignificant features as the ancient earthen embankments on Wimbledon Common illustrated. Similarly, market towns and market days are carefully identified throughout. Within London itself, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Regent's Park, and the Tower of London are illustrated.
