This is the seminal 1710 (Hoei 7) woodblock Buddhist world map composed by the monk Rokashi Hotan. It is the first Japanese printed map to depict the world, including Europe and America, from a Buddhist cosmographical perspective. Inspired by the 1653 publication of Si-yu-ki (or Xiyuji 西域記), a pilgrimage narrative of the Chinese monk Hsuang-Tsang's (or Xuanzang 玄奘, 602 - 604 CE) travels to India in search of sacred Sanskrit writings, it attempts to reconcile Buddhist and Western cartography. This is a superb, first-state example of Robert Dudley's 1646 general nautical map of South Asia, from the Arabian Peninsula to the Philippines, including the coastlines of India, the Malay Peninsula, Cochinchina, and southern China. Countless islands of the Indian Ocean are charted, as are the western parts of the East Indies. It is the first printed chart of the route to the Spice Islands produced by an Englishman; it is the first to utilize the Mercator Projection, and the first to show prevailing winds, currents, and magnetic variation. The chart's portolan-like lines suggest its origin in the manuscript charts that informed it. Aesthetically, they distinguish this chart as one of the most elegant works dedicated to the region. This is Martin Waldseemüller's 1513 edition of the Ptolemaic map of India, one of the earliest acquirable maps of the area and an essential step in the subcontinent's cartographic evolution. Waldseemüller and Ringmann issued it for their 1513 Geographie Opus Novissima, the most comprehensively edited and amended edition of Claudius Ptolemy's 2nd-century geography. This is the 'first edition' of the first trigonometrical survey of Nepal, completed by the all-Indian Nepal Detachment of the Survey of India at a time when Nepal was still closed to foreigners under the Rana Dynasty's isolation policy. This is a large 1929 Survey of India topographic map of Anantnag and Baramula Districts in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Dissected and mounted on its original linen from what appears to be a least two separately issued sheets, the map depicts the region from Kanzdor to the Lokut Gumbur Nar and from Bajrathar to Shar and Purmandal. Mountain passes are identified, as are 'temporary huts' and other landmarks. Forests are shaded green and are labeled. Roads of varying grades are also marked, along with foot paths and mineral lines. Glaciers are shaded a blueish-white and have blue dashed lines crossing their expanse. This is Carl Ritter and Julius Ludwig Grimm's 1833 map of parts of the Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau, Nepal, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Dera Dun. This map was compiled at a time when Europeans knew little of this region, and so, this map is a dense amalgam of explorers' accounts and speculation expounded through the lens of Ritter's German Romantic theories of the Earth as a 'cosmic individual'. The work is novel as Ritter correctly deduced that the Transhimalaya is the eastern continuation of the Karkorum system. (more details)
