This is the rare first edition of Christopher and John Greenwood's large-scale 1827 map of London, produced at the height of the Regency period, during which the city was being crafted into a neoclassical metropolis, driven by the Prince Regent (George IV) himself but realized by his favored architect, John Nash. Greenwood's map, in its grand presentation and monumental scope, is the essential cartographic expression of the Regency, and it is considered the largest and finest plan of London to appear in the 19th century. The only known surviving example of this large-format woodcut 'cheap print' issued by George Thompson in 1813, celebrating the Duke of Wellington's stunning triumph over French forces at the Battle of Vitoria (June 21, 1813), a decisive battle in the years-long Peninsular War (1808 - 1814). It is likely the earliest printed representation of the battle, being a news-as-it-happened publication. The victory helped to solidify Wellington's stature as the ablest British commander of land forces, earning him the rank of field marshal and later the title of Duke. The 'cheap print' is a uniquely British form of graphic news publishing issued for distribution among the uneducated but engaged populace. (more details)

This is an exceptional c. 1939 manuscript map of Pimlico, London, capturing the social geography of wartime London just before the Blitz, German aerial bombing campaign against London and the rest of the United Kingdom. Uniquely, rather than emphasizing civil defense, it meticulously identifies the pubs, clubs, theaters, and nightlife that sustained morale in the shadow of grim war. The map's remarkable precision, suggestive of a military hand, leads us to believe it was prepared as a recreation guide for soldiers on leave, preserving a vibrant urban landscape that would soon be devastated during the Blitz of 1940-1941. A beautiful example of one of Abraham Ortelius' most interesting maps, his 1570 map of Scandinavia and the Arctic. During the Age of Discovery, the Arctic was as remote and unfamiliar as the coasts of America, Africa, or Asia. This map played a role in propagating several cartographic fallacies, including the Zeno Fraud: Frisland, Estotiland, Drogeo. The present example, in a 1602 Vrients edition, features warm, original color. (more details)

This is a superbly decorative 1851 John Tallis city plan of London, issued to commemorate the Great Exhibition and arguably Tallis's most ambitious single map. Touted on its release as 'the most beautiful and perfect Plan of London ever produced,' it makes a convincing case for the publisher's boast: John Rapkin's finely engraved plan is surrounded by an elaborate pictorial border of views depicting London's public buildings, monuments, and places of amusement. Both a practical city plan and lavish visual celebration of the Victorian metropolis, it captures London at a defining moment, when the Great Exhibition presented the city to the world as a center of industry, commerce, culture, and modernity. This 1869 Johnston city plan or map of Edinburgh and Leith, Scotland, presents an impressively detailed overview of the city during an era of rapid industrial expansion. For more than 30 years, this map was the finest available map of Edinburgh, used for urban planning, city administration, trade, infrastructure development, and more. Shipyards, mills, factories, breweries, foundries, and ironworks, many of which are labeled, fuel an economic boom. The city's railways and stations are illustrated in detail. Central Edinburgh's iconic grid, designed by James Craig in 1768, stands in contrast to the maze of streets and lanes that create the rest of the city. As a historical aside, 1869 was also the year the 'Edinburgh Seven,' the first group of female students to enroll in a British university, began attending the University of Edinburgh Medical School, although they were not allowed to take degrees. This is an uncommon 1855 George Frederick Cruchley map of London and its immediate environs. Presented here in case format, Cruchley's map depicts the area thirty miles around London, or from Hertford to Turnbridge and Godalming, and from Windsor to Chatham. Exceptionally vivid color work identifies counties, rail lines, roads, and forests. The detail throughout is extraordinary, with even such insignificant features as the ancient earthen embankments on Wimbledon Common illustrated. Similarly, market towns and market days are carefully identified throughout. Within London itself, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Regent's Park, and the Tower of London are illustrated. (more details)
