This is Cornelis De Jode's rare map of North America, printed in a single edition of 1593. The first full-size folio map specifically of North America, it was among the updated maps added to the De Jode atlas specifically to compete with Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. To this end, it combined cartographic information from current sources with a level of decorative flourish that had not yet appeared in any atlas. In the case of this map, Cornelis focused on a part of the world omitted from the elder De Jode's 1578 atlas. (more details)

This is Vincenzo Coronelli's striking 1688 two-sheet map of North America - one of the largest and most influential atlas maps to appear in the late 17th century. This is the important 1777 Georges Le Rouge French edition of the seminal John Mitchell map of the eastern part of North America. The Mitchell map is considered the single most important map in 18th-century American history. This is the suppressed 1784 first edition of Henry Roberts and Captain James Cook's legendary 'Lost Map', issued separately by London publisher William Faden. This is the first map to illustrate the discoveries of Samuel Herne on the Coppermine River. This is an extremely scarce, influential, and often misunderstood map of North America published in 1765 by Samuel Engel. Engel composed this map to address and reconcile conflicting speculations regarding the American West and North Pacific - specifically the Buache-Delisle / Müller-Bering controversy. He compiled it from primary-source material, ranging from Lahonton's fictional expedition to the factual account of the American Indian voyager Moncacht-Apé. The latter led to Engel's mapping of the Columbia River - the first such map to do so based on actual observation. Although obscure today, Engel's work was well received when published. Thus, it provided source material for some of the most significant maps of the latter 18th century. (more details)

A most unusual and intriguing 1833 wall map of America by Eustache Hérisson. The map makes a number of interesting and curious claims regarding multiple possibilities for a Northwest Passage - attempting to reconcile factual discovery, with apocryphal popular legends, and outright wishful thinking. It covers the western hemisphere, focusing on North and South America, and the surrounding oceans. Full coverage extends east to include the coasts of Europe and Africa, and west as far as New Caledonia and New Hebrides. As the title suggests, tracks follow the maritime routes of important explorers, including Cook, Vancouver, La Perouse. The map also notes the overland expeditions of Mackenzie (1780) and Hearne (1772). This is Nicolas de Fer's 1699 map of America, in a lovely old color example of the second state, printed in 1705. Both of the first two states of this map were separately issued, and are consequently rare. This detailed and richly annotated map, derived from De Fer's own 1698 L'Amerique Divisée Selon Letendue de set Principales Parties, shows the Americas during a period in which France was dominant in the exploration and mapping of North America.
