A rare and important discovery, this is Mingjie Liu's (刘明杰) (1857 - 1911) important 1892 (Guangxu 18) Qing Era xylographic (woodcut) map of China - the earliest known example of what is considered China's first commercial map and possibly the first Chinese comical map. The map was revolutionary when Liu created it, as this was neither administrative nor religious; instead, it was a commercially marketed folk piece, muban nianhua (木版年画), created in Yangjiabu, Shandong, for traditional Chinese New Year festivals. Coverage extends to all of China, as well as marginal inclusions in the form of tenuous mappings of foreign places, including European countries, Southeast Asia, India, and apocryphal destinations. This is Joseph Bouchette's monumental 10-sheet map of Lower Canada. Appearing at the end of the War of 1812, this is the largest, best, and most influential map of Canada issued in the 19th century. David Rumsey correctly praises it, saying that the 'graphic elegance of the large map is the equal (or perhaps the superior) of any of the contemporary maps that I have seen'. In its pre-publication manuscript form, it played a significant role in the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812 and began the establishment of formal U.S.-Canada borders. This is Joseph-Francis Bouchette's rare large-scale 1831 map of Canada - a seminal map relating to Canadian development, immigration, and land usage. The map details the provinces of Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario and Quebec), which were established in 1791. Most significantly, the map focuses on lands, towns, roads, and districts designated to the Canada Company - the most important immigration and settlement initiative in Canadian history. The Canada Company’s copious settlements are indicated on the map by an asterisk or a cross next to each name. This superb four sheet map is Captain John Montresor's 1768 map of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island. Montresor produced this map following the British victory in the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763) and during a period of growing unrest in Britain's American colonies prior to the American Revolution (1775 - 1783). His association with the region leads to French and Indian War; he accompanied British forces to Halifax and took part in the siege of Louisbourg. Following the French defeat, Montresor traveled throughout the region to elicit oaths of allegiance from these formerly French territories. One of the most spectacularly decorative maps of the 18th century, this is Henri Chatelain's magnificent 1719 map of the Americas and the Pacific. This sumptuously engraved map is centered on the American continent but extends west to include all of the Pacific as far as Beijing (Peking), China and Australia, and eastward to include much of Europe and the western half of Africa. Longitudinally it extends from the Hudson Bay to the southern tip of Tierra del Fuego. The map is graphically rich with a wealth of lush inset maps and vignette illustrations throughout. This is a very scarce and enormous Meiji 9 or 1876 Japanese double hemisphere world map set by Hayami Iwakichi. Aside from its sheet immensity, the map is notable for reflecting changing Japanese understanding of world geography in the fallout from the Meiji Restoration. Hayami offers a very Japanese worldview superimposed upon a modern world map, with some places are diminished and others exaggerated in size to reflect not only their importance to Japan, but also Japan's perspective regarding its own position on the world stage. The map captures French ambitions to reclaim its American territories in the wake of the American Revolution. This is a superb, rare example of Joachim Ottens' large, beautifully engraved c. 1719 four-sheet map of Spain and Portugal that notably references battles during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701 - 1714). The map was printed to four sheets for inclusion in folio atlases, but could be joined together to make a wall map. This is J. H. Colton's impressive large-scale 1852 map of Brooklyn and Williamsburg. In its 1839 first edition, it is the Brooklyn equivalent to both the 1811 Commissioner' Plan and Colton's great 1836 map of Manhattan, and as such can reasonably be considered the most important and best map of Brooklyn to appear in the 19th century. The is the first official map of the Canadian Pacific Railroad issued after the railroad's completion in 1885. This map is of critical importance to the development of the Canadian Confederation, as well as the first complete map of the second North American intercontinental railroad. This enormous map was issued in 1886 by A. M. Edwards and Canadian Government Railways. Depicting the entire country in two sections, the map identifies ninety-three different railways throughout Canada - but the focus is the impressive Canadian Pacific Route, which stretches from Montreal to British Columbia.
