The map was compiled for Abd al-Mutalib ibn Ghalib, Emir and Grand Sharif of Mecca, known for his pro-slavery anti-Ottoman positions, as well as for his modernization of infrastructure in both Mecca and Medina. This is a 1972 Arabic-language wall map of Iraq prepared by Tuma Al-Sadi, a high-level bureaucrat in the Ba'athist government, and printed by the General Directorate for Survey. Packed with information, it covers everything from irrigation projects (the main focus of the General Directorate for Survey) to resorts, historical landmarks, tourist riverboats, and other information relevant to tourists. These dual purposes - highly technical on the one hand and leisurely on the other - seem an odd pairing but make sense within the context of the ambitious goals set by the Ba'athists. (more details)

This is a unique and striking c. 1926 Arabic-language map of the Suez and environs, including Palestine, the Hijaz, and Egypt, printed by the Damanhur Industrial School Press. Replete with religious and patriotic messages, the map was part of a wider national awakening in early 20th-century Egypt that eventually rebuffed British de facto rule over the country. More specifically, it promotes a never-built railway through Egypt's Eastern Desert linking the Nile and the Red Sea that would have provided economic benefits as well as a faster route for Hajj pilgrims from the Nile's heartland. This is a 1935 Egon Huber pictorial map of Rhodes, then a colony of Mussolini's Italy, in an unusual edition with Arabic text on the verso. It reflects the spirit of Rhodes' pre-occupation period, before the onset of aggressive Italianization policies, when the beautiful island was celebrated for its cultural diversity.
