This is the important 1777 Georges Le Rouge French edition of the seminal John Mitchell map of the eastern part of North America. The Mitchell map is considered the single most important map in 18th-century American history. It was used as a primary reference for nearly every treaty and boundary dispute in colonial North America from the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763) through the late 19th century. The map is all the more astounding because this is Mitchell's one and only map - a truly remarkable feat of virtuosity. (more details)

This is a rare c. 1720 Chéreau broadside leaflet map-view of the Gulf of Mexico littoral, just a few years after New Orleans was founded. It is likely the earliest printed view of New Orleans - though admittedly, it is not an accurate representation of the city at the time. The map was issued as a propaganda leaflet to promote New Orleans and French Louisiana, and thus coverage extends east to encompass most of the Florida Panhandle. It is among the earliest maps to include a view of New Orleans and the indigenous peoples of the Gulf. The present example is the first state, with extraordinary period color. (more details)

A striking 1875 Reconstruction Era map of Chatham County, Georgia, illustrating in large the vicinity of Savannah. This map was published by Charles G. Platen, who incorporated local survey work, the 1818 John McKinnon map, and the meticulous work of the U.S. Coast Survey to compile this, the largest and most detailed map of the Savannah area ever issued. The intent behind the map, to develop agricultural lands, is evident in the color coding, with green referencing lowlands, swamps, and other wetlands, blue representing water, and yellow arable land. Platen advances the map considerably by drawing on the work of 36 local surveyors, all of whom are named, to add property lots and owners throughout. (more details)

This is an extremely scarce 1861 British Admiralty Chart of the Savannah River and city of Savannah, Georgia, issued at the outset of the American Civil War (1961 - 1865). Although formally neutral in the conflict, British private interests financed blockade runners that sent munitions and luxuries to Confederate ports in return for cotton and tobacco. This map of the Savannah River was doubtless produced for this purpose.
The map is derived from U.S. Coast Survey work in the Savannah region completed in 1855, and although the Admiralty chart is superior in construction and presentation, is substantively similar. Coverage extends from the mouth of the Savanna River, Hilton Head, and Tybee Island, westward towards savanna, as far north as Argyle Island. The triangulation for this map was completed by E.O. Cord, C. O. Boutelle, C. P. Bolles and D. T. Van Buren. The topography is the work of H. I. Whiting. The Hydrography was accomplished by a party under the command of J. N. Maffitt. (more details)

This is an uncommon 1776 French-language map of the Thirteen Colonies and emerging United States by Augsburg cartographer Matthias Albrecht Lotter, published at the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. Drawing heavily on French cartographic traditions, the map presents British North America at the very moment the colonies declared independence and the United States began to take shape. Issued two years before France formally entered the Revolutionary War on the American side, it captures the continent on the cusp of a geopolitical transformation that would redraw North America. An exceptionally rare separate issue c. 1862 Civil War Era U.S. Coast Survey nautical chart or map of the Savannah River and surrounding waters. This chart combines existing surveys of the Savannah River with separate charts prepared of the Wassaw Sound and the Wilmington and Tybee Rivers. Given the presentation on heavier stock and the maps relative rarity, it is likely this was a separate issue prepared for naval action early in the American Civil War (1861 - 1865). (more details)

This is a nice example of Charles Currier and James Ives' print depicting the 1864 capture of Atlanta by Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's forces during the U.S. Civil War. The battle was a key victory in Sherman's 1864 Georgia campaign, which culminated in the 'March to the Sea' and the capture of Savannah. Having seized the rebels' rail hub, destroyed their supply lines, and quite literally cut the Confederacy in half, the campaign was decisive in ensuring the Confederacy's ultimate defeat.
