This is Vincenzo Coronelli's striking 1688 two-sheet map of North America - one of the largest and most influential atlas maps to appear in the late 17th century. It emerged as much of North America had yet to be penetrated or was in the earliest stages of exploration and colonization - a true golden land of possibility. There is much of interest, including being among the first maps to embrace the cartography of Don Diego Peñalosa in New Mexico, a bold embrace of the Insular California trope, recognition of the Danish explorations of Jens Munk, an early usage of the term Chicago (Chekagou), and an interesting mapping of the apocryphal Lake May, the great inland sea of the southeast. This rare volume is the first and only edition of Ambrosius Svenonis Nidelberg's 1675 description of the New World: it is the earliest substantial Swedish printed work pertaining to America. Sabin described it as 'one of the scarcest of the Swedish typographical productions of the seventeenth century on America.' The work is both geographical and ethnographic: it is the first Swedish description of North America's indigenous population. This is the 1646 first state of Robert Dudley's chart of the middle part of the Americas, illustrating the proximity of the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and emphasizing the narrow parts of Central America dividing the two bodies of water. The chart features the western part of the Caribbean, but it is particularly noted for being the first printed sea chart to focus on the Pacific coast, including California. It is, along with Dudley's more narrowly focused charts, the first printed chart of the West Indies and South Florida to employ the Mercator Projection. This stunning blueback nautical chart or map of Cuba, issued by James Imray in 1854, has all of the hallmarks of a working shipboard chart and a life at sea. Centered on Cuba, the map covers from Key West (Florida) to Grand Cayman, and from Cape Antonio (Cuba) to the Inagua Islands (Bahamas), coving all of Cuba, and parts of the southern Bahama Islands. Along the bottom of the map there are eight detail sub-maps, including, from left: Havana Harbor, Bahia Honda, Port Mariel, Port Guantanamo (Guantanamo Bay), Santiago de Cuba, Matanzas, Juaga or Zagua, and the Entrance of Puerto de la Nuevias. Some marks in pencil in the Old Bahama Channel or Santaren Channel (Bahamas) indicate navigation use. Soundings, particularly on the south coast of Cuba and throughout the Great Bahama Bank are in fathoms. (more details)

This is the 1675 first French edition of the earliest specific map of Barbados during the Sugar Revolution. The map is based upon Richard Ligon's 1657 map, composed from information received in Barbados from Captain John Swan, the island's leading surveyor. Ligon compiled it in debtor's prison after returning to London from a 2-year stint as a planter in Barbados. The map is oriented to the east and offers fair accuracy, though it exaggerates the island's length by roughly a third. The map identifies numerous plantations throughout by name, as well as the beginnings of Bridgetown as 'Bridge'. In the middle of the map, a notation references the land leased by James Hay, 1st Earl of Carlisle (c. 1580 - 1636), to a group of merchants after Charles I rescinded the original grant of the island to Sir William Courteen (1572 - 1636). This is a superb, first-edition example of Ortelius' 1579 map of Cuba and the Caribbean, combined with his map of the Viceroyalty of Culiacan in Northwestern Mexico. While Ortelius' Theatrum had been in print since 1570, it was not until 1579 that this map was added to the book.
