This is a 1941 hand-colored pictorial map of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, prepared by Brick House Art Studios. An exemplary pictorial map of the era, it lovingly celebrates the culture, environment, and history of Cape Cod.A Closer Look
The map presents Cape Cod from the Cape Cod Canal eastwards. Charming illustrations reflecting local history, culture, wildlife, recreation, and products, from Sandwich Glass to Provincetown's art scene. Common themes include the Cape's maritime orientation (yachting, lighthouses, fishing), outdoor opportunities (beaches, golf, hunting), and local history dating back to colonial times (windmills, the Aptucxet Trading Post). Camp Edwards is prominent on the left; the recently established military base became an important training ground for U.S. troops just before and during World War II (1939 - 1945). On the water, steamships, a German U-Boat, and even a sea monster (likely a reference to a 1937 hoax and publicity stunt orchestrated by Tony Sarg, who was also a map illustrator) also appear.Publication History and Census
This map was issued by Brick House Art Studios based in York, Maine, in 1941. Few works by Brick House Art Studios survive, with this map and our listing of their map of Massachusetts (Massachusetts-brickhouse-1930) being rare examples. Brick House also produced a map of Florida. We have been unable to locate other examples of this map in institutional collections or on the market.Condition
