Non Western Cartography

A wider view of the history of maps.

A distinctive Geographicus specialization is cartography created within non-Western traditions. Our interests extend beyond European depictions of the world to maps made within Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Thai, Korean, and other cultural contexts.

These works invite different questions about geography: how language shapes a map, how places are named, how sacred and political space is represented, and how knowledge travels between cultures.

For reporting on global cartographic history, ask us about regional traditions, cross-cultural exchange, and the research needed to interpret maps on their own terms.
