Scarce manuscript survey map of one of the most beautiful parts of Cobble Hill, Brooklyn.
A one-of-a-kind and historically important 1853 early manuscript (hand drawn) survey map of parts of Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. The map covers the square roughly defined by Congress Street on the north, Warren Street on the south, Clinton Street on the west, and Court Street on the east. Veranda Place is here defined as 'Ally in Common.' The survey was clearly intended to settle property claims as regards the heirs of the Irish born merchant John Greacen (1784 – August 5, 1852). Graecen made a fortune manufacturing India Rubber (natural Ruber). John Graecen's heirs were James R. Greacen, John Greacen Jr. ,and 'Jane, wife of Wm. P. Buckmaster. Today this beautiful leafy area is one of the most beautiful streets in Brooklyn. The palatial home of John Graecen still stands at 202 Warren Street, lot no. 8 on this map, but it has since been converted into condominiums. Many individual properties are noted, most of which remain in use as private homes. The map bears a stamp and serial number dating to 1907 suggesting it must have been deaccessioned from a surveyor's office, but there is no clear indication of further provenance. This is a one of a kind treasure for the right collection.Condition
Average. Map has seen some wear leading to cracks, some loss, toning. High quality older restoration.
