Even more uniquely colorful...
This is a vibrant and uncommon 1982 pictorial promotional view of the Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Florida, drawn by Linda Blissberger. One of Miami's oldest neighborhoods, Coconut Grove had become the center of Florida's youth counter-culture and bohemian movement in the preceding years, reflected in the illustration style employed here.A Closer Look
The view is oriented roughly towards the southeast, facing towards the Atlantic Ocean, with the Dixie Highway (U.S. 1) in the foreground. Major streets are labeled, while most of the view is taken up by colorful, bright illustrations advertising local businesses, including restaurants, hotels, clothing stores, record shops, and more. Important annual events are also referred to, including the Banyan Festival and the Annual Turkey Race. Downtown Miami is included in the distance at the top-left.Coconut Grove
Coconut Grove is a historic neighborhood located in Miami, Florida, known for its lush tropical landscape, bohemian atmosphere, and rich cultural heritage. Established in the late 19th century, it is one of Miami's oldest continuously inhabited neighborhoods. Originally settled by Bahamian immigrants and artists, Coconut Grove has evolved into a vibrant community that blends old-world charm with modern urban living. The area is home to a variety of attractions, including the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, the Barnacle Historic State Park, and numerous art galleries, shops, and restaurants. Its eclectic mix of residents, including artists, writers, and professionals, has made Coconut Grove a unique and desirable location within Miami, offering a laid-back lifestyle with a strong sense of community.Publication History and Census
This view was drawn by 'Blissberger,' that is, Linda Blissberger, an airbrush artist active in Coconut Grove. Its production was an annual tradition from 1972, this being the 10th or 1982 edition. Regardless of edition, we find no institutional holdings and minimal market history. We have previously sold an example of the 1980 edition, which, though stylistically similar and containing many of the same businesses, is viewed from the opposite perspective (from the ocean towards the northwest).Condition
