Bucolic Splendor on Green Bay.
This is a vibrant 1957 pictorial map of Door County (Door Peninsula), Wisconsin, prepared by local artist Miles Standish Gates. Nestled between Green Bay and Lake Michigan, the peninsula is known for its stunning scenery and distinctive local culture in brilliant color.A Closer Look
Door County, nearly coterminous with the Door Peninsula, is displayed jutting out into Lake Michigan, forming Green Bay to its west. Highways and major roads are traced throughout, with county highways utilizing a simple system of letters alongside the numbered state highways. Illustrations throughout depict local industries, mostly related to agriculture, fishing, and brewing. Recreational activities are also depicted, with golfing, boating, and beach-going being especially prominent. Other drawings relate to local history, landmarks, and lore, from Native Americans to the Scandinavian heritage of many of the area's residents. Villages, towns, harbors, bays, the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal, and other features are labeled.Publication History and Census

Miles Standish Gates (April 9, 1889 - November 6, 1973) was a commercial artist active in and around Chicago, Illinois, in the mid-20th century. Gates was born in Cawker City, Kansas, but his family moved to Chicago early in his childhood. Little information on his life and training is available. He appears to have worked a variety of jobs before settling into work as a commercial artist sometime in the 1920s. (A 1926 advertisement offers his services for 'package and cartoon design - store displays'.) He briefly lived in Detroit and Milton, Illinois, before settling in Wheaton, near Chicago. He also appears to have lived on the Door Peninsula in Ephraim, Wisconsin, which could have been a summer residence. Gates married Thelma Sawyer around the year 1927, with whom he had two daughters.
