Description

This is a 1948 John Sink pictorial map of eastern North Carolina. The map depicts the region from White Lake and Lake Waccamaw to the Atlantic Ocean and from Elizabeth City to Shallotte Inlet. Drawn in a style reminiscent of the comic books of the era, numerous vignettes illustrate the activities and events highlighted. Hunting and fishing are vigorously promoted, with an incredible depiction of the Gulf Stream filled with deep sea game fish just off the coast of the Outer Banks. Tourists are included sun bathing and surfing up and down the coast and several spots are noted for having great hotels, beaches, and cottages. Other locations in the region are labeled, including several gardens and the marine training base at Camp Lejeune. New Bern, Wilmington, and Elizabeth City are among the cities and towns labeled, along with rivers and lakes. A highway map of the majority of North Carolina is included in a circular inset situated on the map's left side. The state's principal highways are marked in red and the tours printed on the verso are noted by green circles.

This map was drawn by John Sink, printed by the Winston Printing Company, and published by North Carolina's state tourism bureau.
