A Closer Look

Centered on Jojo's home of Marathon, coverage embraces from Key Largo to Key West. Despite its playful nature, the map is a wealth of information, encapsulating local history, supposed wreck sites, flora, fauna, geographical details, and much more. A numerical key just below the Keys names 26 sites, a combination of shipwrecks, reefs, great fishing spots, and other sites. A small inset in the lower left extends coverage as far as the Dry Tortugas. The compass rose is a dramatic production incorporating American Indians, conquistadors, and pirates. The base of the map is a dramatic illustration of the sea floor, illustrating indigenous marine life, as well as a panorama of shipwreck detritus, treasure, and coral.

This map was drawn and published in 1990 by JoJo Carey, of Marathon, Florida. The present example is hand signed by the artist. Scarce. We note just three institutional holdings: Library of Congress, University of South Carolina, and University of California Santa Barbara.
