'Public health crisis'.

This is a 1970 Associated Press map of the United States highlighting gonorrhea cases. Gonorrhea and other venereal diseases were a growing concern in 1970, and public health officials rolled out multiple educational campaigns to curb their spread. The map was created for an article by Brian Sullivan for the AP wire service about the rising number of gonorrhea cases nationwide.
A Closer Look
The map depicts the continental United States with Alaska and Hawaii in the lower left. Each state is shaded based on the number of reported gonorrhea cases per 100,000 people, ranging from white (states with the lowest number of cases) to striped to black (states with the highest number of cases). Georgia had the highest number of reported cases, and Wyoming had the lowest.
Publication History and Census
This map was created by the Associated Press (AP) and distributed as an AP Wirephoto Map to accompany an article written by Brian Sullivan for the AP. The article and the map appeared in newspapers across the country beginning on June 2, 1970, through at least June 5, 1970. AP Wirephoto Maps in general are scarce on the private market, and specific maps can be difficult to find.
