Description

This is a rare 1899 State Abstract Company city plan or map of Montgomery, Alabama. A highly detailed real estate map, individual lots throughout the city are illustrated and labeled, although some areas appear to have not yet fully divided lotted. Streets are identified, as are city wards, cemeteries, and parks. Mills, a distillery, a gun club, the stock yards, and the brick yard are also noted. Numerous railroad lines, including the Georgia and Alabama Railroad, the Alabama Midland Railroad, and the Mobile and Montgomery Division of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Views of the Court House, the Hotel Mabson, and Union Station are situated around the central map, as is a small inset map of the vicinity of Montgomery. The whole is surrounded by advertisements for local companies, such as the Montgomery Brewery, the Montgomery Carriage Works Company, a local undertaker, a jeweler, hotels, banks, and druggists.
Publication History and Census
This map was created and published by the State Abstract Company in 1899. The OCLC catalogues this map as being part of the institutional collections at Harvard, Vanderbilt, and Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. It rarely appears on the private market.

Cartographer

The State Abstract Company (1886 - Present) was founded in 1886 by James S. Pinckard (d. July 15, 1926), a local businessman and real estate developer. It is unclear exactly when, but at some point Pinckard sold his stake in the State Abstract Company to Jack Thorington, Sr. (d. May 28, 1936) who served as president of the company until his death. Then his son, Jack Thorington, Jr. became president of the company, and we have been unable to locate any details of his time running the business. Today, the State Abstract and Title Company, most likely the same business started by Pinckard in 1886, is still operating in Montgomery. More by this mapmaker...
