Baumgarten, Eugen Karl Joseph von

Eugen Karl Joseph von Baumgarten (May 5, 1865 - December 9, 1919) was a German illustrator, caricaturist, graphic designer, and painter best known for his satirical and humorous illustrations and his propaganda illustrations during the First World War. Baumgarten was born in Regensburg but spent most of his life and career in Munich, beginning as a painter and art gallery owner in 1891. He began producing illustrations for various local and regional magazines, including Humoristischen Blätter, whose editor was his friend, Julius Beck (1852 - 1920), the Münchener Humoristischen Blättern, and Jugend, known for its striking Art Nouveau illustrations. He also prepared colorful advertisements, posters, and postcards for the likes of the Münchener Brauhäuser and Oktoberfest celebrations (his cousin, Hermann Roth, published the official Münchener Oktoberfest-Zeitung). Baumgarten also operated his own printing and publishing house. During the First World War, he produced propaganda illustrations reflecting the German perspective on the war. Baumgarten was known for employing several pseudonyms, abbreviations of his name, or even symbols that were puns on his name as signatures.

This is a powerful 1915 pictorial zoomorphic serio-comic map of Europe, prepared by German illustrator Eugen von Baumgarten as propaganda during World War I (1914 - 1918). It depicts Great Britain as a spider ensnaring and eating its allies, who, unwittingly, have been caught in its web. (more details)
