Hoxie, Stephen Jerome
Stephen Jerome Hoxie (September 24, 1895 - October 6, 1981) was an artist, writer, and illustrator best known for his watercolors but who also produced illustrated maps. Born in Phenix, Rhode Island, Hoxie attended the Rhode Island School of Design and served in the Navy during the First World War. In 1917, he married Jessie Isabel Sanders, with whom he had three children but who died young in 1933. By 1926, Hoxie had relocated to Connecticut. Though his residences were variously listed in Stonington, New London, Mystic, Greenwich, and Manchester, Vermont in the following decades, he was a fixture of the art scene in Mystic, along with his wife (m. 1968), May Gardner Hoxie (c. 1922 - 2008). The two established the Hoxie School of Art, the Mystic Art Center in 1968 and in 1979 the May Gardner Hoxie Art Foundation Gallery. The couple also operated an art supply and framing business in Mystic for many years. Hoxie was also deeply involved with the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival and the Mystic Maritime Museum (now the Mystic Seaport Museum). In 1966, a scenic overlook in Mystic was named in his honor.
