Sanguine Portrait of Morales de los Ríos by Candido Portinari, Museu D. João VI, Brazil.
Adolfo Morales de los Ríos (March 10, 1858 – September 3, 1928) was a Spanish architect, urban planner, cartographer, and educator whose career extended from Belle Époque San Sebastián to Rio de Janeiro. Born in Seville, he studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before establishing his practice in Spain. In San Sebastián, he collaborated with Luis Aladrén Mendivil on the Gran Casino, designed in 1882 and inaugurated on July 1, 1887. Overlooking the gardens of Alderdi Eder, the building became a landmark of the fashionable seaside resort and later served as the city's town hall. Morales de los Ríos also drew a view of its proposed principal façade, published as a lithograph by Vicente Ordozgoiti. His documented cartographic work includes the elaborate 1882 Plano de la Ciudad de San Sebastián, lithographed and published by Vicente Ordozgoiti. Morales de los Ríos later worked in Cádiz, where he collaborated on the design of the Gran Teatro Falla, before settling in Brazil in 1890 after a journey to South America in 1889. In Rio de Janeiro, he became an influential architect and professor at the National School of Fine Arts, contributing to the city's early 20th-century modernization. His best-known Brazilian works include the School of Fine Arts building, now the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, and the building later occupied by the Supreme Federal Court, now the Centro Cultural Justiça Federal. He died in Rio de Janeiro in 1928. His son, Adolfo Morales de los Ríos Filho, also became an architect and architectural historian.
