Description


This is a beautiful 1893 Vuillemin map of the French department of Gironde. This coastal department is the seat of the Bordeaux wine region and produces many of the world's finest reds. Shows numerous vineyards and chateaux. The map includes a beautifully illustrated view of Bordeaux along with portraits of Montesquieu, the French political philosopher and Nansouty, the French cavalry commander, both born in Gironde. Also includes the illustration of the coat of arms of Bordeaux. The map was engraved by Migeon and published by Vuillemin in 1893.

Alexandre Vuillemin (1812-1880) was a cartographer and an book editor based in Paris, France. Despite a prolific cartographic career, much of Vuillemin's life is shrouded in mystery. What is known is that his studied under the prominent French Auguste Henri Dufour (1798-1865). Vuillemin's most important work his detailed, highly decorative large format Atlas Illustre de Geographie Commerciale et Industrielle.



J. Migeon (fl. c. 1855 - 1899) was a late 19th century map publisher based in Paris, France. At various times Migeon maintained offices at76, Rue de la Harpe, 34 Rue du Chemin des Plantes, and 11 Rue du Moulin Vert, all in Paris. His most prominent publications are the Geographie Universal in 1854 (updated through 1874) and the Nouvel Atlas Illustré de Géographie Universelle in 1891. Little is known of Migeon's life and even his first name is uncertain.
