Description

This is a c. 1948 General Commisariat of Tourism for Belgium pictorial tourist map of Belgium and Luxembourg, issued to promote post-war tourism.
A Closer Look
Charming pictorial vignettes mark cities and towns across the two countries, including Brussels, Bruges, Ghent, Liège, Bastogne, and Luxembourg City. Other vignettes in unlabeled France, Germany, and the Netherlands, depict characteristic scenes. Trains and planes make their way to Belgium from panels to the left and right of the map. In an illustration to the left, a mother helps her child 'take their first steps' on the continent, a thinly veiled reference to the Commissariat of Tourism's helpful hand in planning a trip to Belgium and Luxembourg. Printed photos of cities and artistic treasures throughout the two countries, along with promotional text, appear on the verso.
