Title

The John Steinbeck Map of America.
  1986 (dated)     20 x 26 in (50.8 x 66.04 cm)

Description

This is a 1986 John Wolnick map of the United States with reference to John Steinbeck's novels. The map of the United States is overshadowed by the large inset maps of Monterey and Salinas. 150 locations are numerically identified and correspond with an index along the bottom border. Circles mark places that were important to John Steinbeck as well as significant events in his works. East of Eden dominates the index, with over fifty locations named.
Pictorial Border
Vignette illustrations depicting scenes from Steinbeck's novels, including The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, and The Pearl frame the central map. The sign in the lower right corner reads 'This is your country. Don't let the big men take it away from you' is a direct reference to a protest sign photographed by Dorothea Lange in Kern County, California, in January 1939.
A Wonderful Series of Literary Maps
Aaron Blake published a series of literary maps in the mid to late 1980s. Some focused on specific cities (such as New York, Paris, and Los Angeles), some on specific authors (Ernest Hemingway, Ian Fleming, Jane Austen), and others on geographic regions (the American South, Latin America). Every map is visually striking in its own way and a great addition to any bibliophile's collection.
Publication History and Census
This map was illustrated by John Wolnick and published by Aaron Blake Publishers in 1986. It is well represented in institutional collections.
