Description

This is a 1981 Richard Bibler pictorial map of the Monterey Peninsula, California.
A Closer Look
Brightly colored and wonderfully illustrated, Bibler highlights famous and not-so-famous sites throughout the peninsula. The Seventeen-Mile Drive is highlighted, along with beaches and parks. Surfers and swimmers appear all along the coast, as do Poseidon, a mermaid, and numerous fishing boats. Banners and signs mark Monterey, Seaside, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Pacific Grove. An inset in the lower right quadrant focuses on historic Monterey and identifies thirty-three important locations in that part of town. The inset is bordered by views of many of these, including several old houses, the Mayo Hays Library, California's first theater, and the Royal Presidio Chapel. Vignettes create the map's border and provide a short history of the Peninsula.
Publication History and Census
This map was created and published by Richard Bibler in 1981. We note two examples cataloged in OCLC which are part of the collections at the University of California Santa Barbara and the University of California Berkeley. Bibler published a pictorial map of the Monterey Peninsula in 1970 that bears the same title but is visually very different.

Cartographer

Richard Neil 'Dick' Bibler (September 14, 1922 - May 24, 2013) was an American artist, cartoonist, and professor, and is best remembered for his comic 'The Little Man on Campus'. Born in Elkhart, Kansas, Bibler attended the University of Kansas, where he began drawing 'The Little Man on Campus' for the University Daily Kansan around 1946. The comic was eventually syndicated to college newspapers across the country during the 1950s. He published several books of his Little Man on Campus cartoons in the 1950s and 1960s. Bibler attended Colorado State University where he earned a teaching certificate, and then went to Stanford University and obtained an M.A. so he could teach art at the college level. After graduating from Stanford, at some point he moved south to the Monterey Peninsula, where he taught art at Monterey Community College or thirty years. He met his wife Carolyn Mohr while at Colorado State who was an art student. They had three children. More by this mapmaker...
