Description
This is Robert 'Bob' Waldmire's 1992 pictorial bird's-eye view map of Route 66. The product of 4 years of research, Waldmire considered this map his grand opus. From Chicago to Los Angeles, the view-map narrates the experience of Route 66, captivating readers with history and other anecdotes.
A Closer Look
The 10-page map appears on the recto and the verso of a 37-inch-long sheet that folds into fifths. Waldmire traces Route 66, marking cities along the route. Famous landmarks appear, among them the Sears Tower, the St. Louis Arch, and the Santa Monica Pier. In addition, national monuments, wildlife preserves, and other sites are identified. Waldmire also includes the modern highways and interstates that contributed to Route 66's eventual irrelevance, completing the road's romantic story. Information and illustrations fill the sheet densely, with coverage ranging a fair distance from Route 66. He incorporates essential information about each stop, noting elevation and other facts.The Numeric Legend

Robert 'Bob' Waldmire (April 19, 1945 - December 16, 2009) was an American cartographer and artist. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Waldmire soon became associated with the Cozy Dog Drive In restaurant, operated by his father. Waldmire began his career as an artist at Southern Illinois University when decided to create a bird's-eye view' poster of his hometown and have merchants pay to be featured. He eventually created 34 posters in this style. He soon changed his focus to Route 66 (The. Mother Road) and promoted historic sites and other locations along the route. A well-known snowbird, Waldmire spent his winters in the Chiricahua Mountains in Arizona, spending his time in a self-sufficient house he designed himself. During the summer months, Waldmire explored the world in his famous 1972 VW minibus as well as a converted Chevrolet school bus. His VW Microbus was the inspiration for the character 'Fillmore' in the Pixar animated film Cars. More by this mapmaker...

Very good. 16 pages across two sheets. (6 page numeric legend on one sheet and 10 page fold-out map on the other sheet.) Light wear along original fold lines. Scuffing to Page Six of numeric legend and Page 1 of Fold-Out Map.
