Description

This is a c. 1936 Science Press pictorial map of Beijing / Peiping and its environs. The map depicts the region from the Nankow Pass and the Great Wall of China to Beijing and from the mountains west of the city to Beijing. Lovely profile illustrations of temples all over the region are present , including the Temple of Heaven and the Temple of Agriculture in Beijing, the Temple of Earth north of the city, and the Temple of the Sleeping Buddha and the Temple of Azure Clouds to the west Beijing. Several palaces are also labeled, along with museums, the Shuang Ho Sheng Brewery, Tsing Hua University and Yenching University. Each of Beijing's gates is depicted as well, and they are all labeled. The land dedicated to the New Commercial Air Field, the Golf Course, and the Race Course are set apart from the rest by dashed lines, although no buildings are included. The Great Wall traverses the top of the map near the top border, illustrated as a yellow line winding its way through green mountains. Roads, railroads, and rivers are depicted also, although the roads tend to be labeled only within Beijing, and the railroads only bear labels informing the viewer of its terminus.

This map was produced by Science Press c. 1936 and distributed by Lynn's Book Store, located at 128 Morrison Street in Beijing / Peiping. This map was issued along with a city plan of Beijing / Peiping. With only one example cataloged in the OCLC, this charming map is a rare find and would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
