Title

Ye Olde Treasure Map Brunswick and the Golden Isles of Georgia.
  1963 (undated)     16 x 10.5 in (40.64 x 26.67 cm)

Description

This is a 1963 Brunswick-The Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce map of St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and Brunswick, Georgia. The map leverages the region's historical associations with piracy and lost treasure to promote tourism, highlighting the area's many 'treasures.'
A Closer Look
Centered on Brunswick, the map identifies 16 locations across St. Simons Island, Sea Island, and Jekyll Island. Directions read as Hollywood-style directions on a pirates' treasure map. Pirates, sailing ships, swords, and pistols complete the treasure map aesthetic. An inset along the right border situates Brunswick and the Golden Isles along the Eastern Seaboard.
Publication History and Census
The Sunday, September 15, 1963, edition of The Atlanta Journal praises this map, attributing its inspiration to Dr. E.R. Jennings, the Vice President of the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce. This map was created for and published by the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce. We note 2 examples cataloged in OCLC which are part of the collections at the Library of Congress and the University of Georgia.
