Cape Cod's cullinary tradition.

This is a charming 1948 pictorial map of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, designed and published by Claretta Pope Higgins, celebrating the Cape's history, geography, maritime heritage, regional folklore, historic architecture, and distinctive culinary traditions. Combining decorative cartography with whimsical illustrations and traditional New England recipes, the map presents Cape Cod as both a historic landscape and a living cultural destination.
The Map
With coverage embracing all of Cape Cod, Higgins's map identifies historical events, notable buildings, and prominent communities. Illustrations depict churches, houses, lighthouses, and sailing vessels, while the 'Sacred Cod' appears beneath a decorative compass rose. Well-known locations such as Woods Hole, Hyannis Port, and Provincetown are labeled, and an arrow in the upper-left corner points toward the 'Rable of Boston Citie.'
The Border
A distinctive pictorial border surrounds the central map, incorporating large illustrations of fish, seashells, sailing ships, and local birds. Interspersed among these images are recipes for traditional Cape Cod dishes: clam fritters, oyster stew, jelly doughnuts, steamed brown bread, baked beans, fish balls, plum pudding, strawberry dumplings, and cranberry pie.
Publication History and Census
