Description

This is a 1984 Europe Marketing Concept pictorial tourist map of Normandy illustrating the World War II, June 6, 1944, D-Day landings. It combines historical information, remembrance, and practical information for tourists.
Remembering June 6, 1944
Depicting Normandy from Cherbourg to Houlgate, pictorial icons along the coast illustrate landing craft depositing American, British, Canadian, and French soldiers on Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches. Text above the landing craft labels the five landing beaches with various historical details regarding D-Day. Nazi coastal artillery and batteries of mobile artillery point out to sea. Farther inland, paratroopers are illustrated landing around Ste. Mere Eglise, Carentan, and the Pegasus Bridge, while tanks mark armored units.
Planning a Visit
While not overtly a tourist map, sites of interest to people visiting for the 1984 Remembrance are noted. Yellow circles mark the region's many museums, although none are identified by name. Circles with crosses mark cemeteries where British (yellow), American (blue), Polish and Canadian (red), and German (green) casualties are buried.
The 40th Anniversary of D-Day
This year (2024) marks the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. On the 40th Anniversary, U.S. President Ronald Reagan gave a speech at the Pointe du Hoc, where the 2nd U.S. Army Rangers assaulted and scaled the cliffs to take out Nazi artillery.
