A detailed c. 1914 survey map of Duval County, Florida, produced for The Florida Grower's Atlas of Florida.
A Closer Look
Duval County is presented overlaid with survey lines dividing it, for the most part, into one-square-mile blocks. Jacksonville at the center and the St. Johns River stand out prominently, while other cities, towns, waterways, roads, railways, schools, and commissioner's districts are noted. 'Electric roads' likely refer to Jacksonville's streetcar network, 40- miles in length at this time, rendered nearly invisible by the shading.'Florida Grower'
Florida Grower is a long-standing agricultural magazine in Florida. It began as the The Florida Fruit and Produce News in Jacksonville in 1908 but was purchased two years later by the Florida Citrus Exchange to act as its official publication. Around the same time, the magazine's production was relocated to Tampa, and it adopted the name Florida Grower (between 1953 and 1995, it was known as Florida Grower and Rancher). The magazine has historically discussed techniques and practices relevant to farmers, especially citrus farmers, the price of land, overall market conditions, and events such as fairs. It was essential for promoting Florida as an agricultural paradise-in-the-making during the Florida Land Boom of the early 20th century.Publication History and Census
