布哇全嶋及ホノルル亚二匕口市之圖 / The Full Island of Hawaii plus Hilo and Honolulu.
1919 (dated) 20.5 x 30 in (52.07 x 76.2 cm)
1 : 800000
A rare 1919 map of the Hawaiian Islands issued by the Japanese-Hawaiian Honolulu bookstore Hakubundo. This marvelous map covers the eight major Hawaiian Islands with large insets offering further detail of the cities of Honolulu and Hilo. The map identifies railways, roads, industrial buildings, hotels, streets, and more. Most text is in both English and Kanji.
This map was published on January 1 of 1919 by the Hakubundo Bookstore. Hakubundo itself was established in 1910 to provide Japanese books, stationary, toys, arts, magazines, and other sundry goods to Honolulu's vibrant nikkeijin or Japanese diaspora community. A photolithographic image of the store appears in the lower left quadrant. The company remains in business today. This map is quite rare and we have been able to identify no other known examples in any collection public or private.
Very good. Backed on archival tissue. Some wear on original fold lines. Left margin extended.
