Description
An unusual c. 1885 Japanese guidemap to Honolulu, Hawaii. Oriented to the northeast, the map is centered on the Honolulu chapter of the YMCA and focuses on the surrounding downtown area, identifying streets, public transport, municipal buildings, and more. At top there is an additional map detailing the greater Honolulu area from, roughly, the vicinity of the modern day Honolulu Airport to Diamond Head. To the left of the map proper are estimated taxi fares around the city. To the right of the map a series of tables identify shops and other business of importance to the Japanese traveler. The verso contains photo of important Honolulu destinations and practical information for the tourist. This map was published by the Honolulu YMCA. There are several dates on the back associated with the history of Japanese immigration to Hawaii, the latest of which is 1885. Based upon the paper and printing style, is roughly the date we have assigned to the item.
Condition
Very good. Some transference. Wear on original fold lines, especially at fold intersections. A few minor verso reinforcements.
