Description

This is a c. 1984 Norma Renner pictorial map of Key West, Florida. Throughout, important buildings are illustrated in profile including Fort Zachary Taylor and Ernest Hemingway's house. The marker at the southernmost point in the United States appears as well, along the right side of the island just above Fort Taylor. Several Conch Tour trains appear, including one on Roosevelt Boulevard near U.S. 1 at the top of the island. A short history of Key West is included along the right, while an index naming points of interest occupies the left side.

Cartographer

Norma Renner (b. December 17, 1932) was an American artist who specialized in wood carvings. Born in Key West, Renner was a self-proclaimed self-taught craftsman. She began painting at a young age and studied art at Barry College in Miami for one year, but taught herself how to be a wood carver. Her inspiration came from her admiration for wood carvings created by Mario Sanchez depicting historic Key West. She started creating wood carvings around 1972, and by the mid-1990s had created over 340 works. More by this mapmaker...
